Varia Drive In Theater - We went there many times. It was across Highway 80 from Battlefield park and just east of the Alamo Plaza Motel, sort of behind/to the west of the Armstrong Flooring plant.
When I was a little kid, they would show an advertisement for You-Hoo Chocolate Drink by Joe Dimaggio during intermission. Sometimes we (my brother and I) would talk dad into buying us one to share. He always left the car walking in the general direction of the Armstrong Plant on his way to the concession stand. Watching him headed in that direction, I was absolutely certain the big plant (tall, with an open steel structure, lights showing on multiple floors, and steam coming out of vents on the roof) was the Yoo-Hoo factory.
I only recall Armstrong vaguely. I remember the Coca-Cola plant.
Near there was the restaurant w/the big fish out front -- Firsherman's Wharf? Never went there -- or Crechale's. That's how adventurous my family was.
I did go to The Green Derby a handful of times. That was the place to take visiting relatives.

Green Derby New Restaurant Being Built
A handsome new dining place is under construction in West Jackson to be operated by the Green Derby Restaurant for the Drake Motel.
Wise Construction Company of Jackson is building the 4,000 square foot building on U.S. Highway 80 West, on a high knoll overlooking the city’s picturesque skyline.
The building will contain a large dining room, two club dining rooms and a coffee shop with a total seating capacity of 170.
The restaurant is so designed that during the peak hours all dining areas may be served with a minimum of cross traffic by the help.
One wall of the main dining room is set at an angle and is glass to permit diners to view the skyline. The front of the building faces directly west, with a minimum of glass in the front to avoid the hot afternoon sun rays, and to permit the maximum efficiency of air conditioning.
Godfrey and Bassett of Jackson are the architects.

In those days, we lived in West Jackson, on Faircourt Street, A dead in street (they are now called cul-de-sacs), located just west of the old Jackson Country Club, which became Shady Oaks, when JCC moved to Old Canton Road. Occasionally I will commission a Bradly Armored Fighting Vehicle from the military for the afternoon and drive past our old house there.
I remember when Westland Plaza was still a place to shop.

Of course, the Coke plant is long gone. Just a shell rusting away and falling in there now. Any big fish memories evade me at the moment. T.he Armstrong tile plant is still going strong. Just West of it was the old Borden's Milk plant. They had a wonderful ice cream parlor there in the 1950s. White cloth tabletops, servers in white jackets and great ice cream dishes. The Borden's parlor was directly in front of the Varia. I think you drove down the west side of the building to get to the entrance of the Varia.
Crechale's is an old school diner with a loyal following. It is a good place to visit for old broken down tables and expensive (but good) food. They are busy-busy on all weekend nights and do just fine during the week. Nostalgia means a lot, I guess. We drove past the Mayflower downtown one day this week. I was shocked at how it has gone down in the past year or so.
I took the wife to The Green Derby on an early date - a long time ago. At that time, it was a very nice restaurant, as was Primos Northgate, Lefleurs, Dinery's, and others that no one remembers.
The Royal was a former vaudeville theater, with box seats, a big stage with a curtain, and everything. It was in it's last days when I was a kid, but they still booked all of the Disney movies, in the days of Bambi, Snow White, Fantasia, etc.

I was in Downtown Jxn a couple of years ago and it looks like a ghost town. Half the storefronts are closed. Even the Radisson (?) Hotel was shut down.

I went to Dennery's once. A bit upscale for my family.
Went to Primos Northgate once. But I went several times to their deli, where you could get some of the same food, cheaper, for take out. I also went to the Primos by Baptist hospital at least once -- for some reason I recall their biscuits fondly.
Went to Lefleur's a handful of times. I think I got to go there as a present for getting my tonsils taken out.

Friend,
This made me laugh a lot.

I just tell myself if I only had the old places, I would miss all of the really good places there are today, well maybe all there were 4 months ago.
Who knows what it will be like in a year?
Yes Crechale's is still going strong, or it was before the shutdown. Mayflower is the same. Not sure if they are open now for takeout, or if they will open after the plague passes. Elite closed maybe 4 months back. They had really gone downhill over the last few years.
Were you around when George Street Grocery was in business? Two blocks north of the Capitol on George street? Bar Downstairs and music upstairs.. The "Frank's Famous Fried Plate" Appetizer was probably the best thing I ever had with a beer or three. Only problem was the place was always full of Legislature guys. The wife gets upset with me when I talk about our State politicians, so I'll stop with that.
I think I had dinner with the wife at Dennery's their last week in business. They were masters with seafood. I think the family just got tired.
Another favorite was Nick's on Lakeland. Closed maybe ten years back. Then Nick Apostle opened the Mermaid Café on the east side of Lake Caroline. A hidden treasure.

Never went there either

Is CS's still around? Another place I never went

Fast food chains at the top of the list. No thank you.

CS's?
Yep. Still going strong, with their large interesting collection of beer cans.
I think Inez bought the place a couple of years back, so the Inez burger is now named after the owner.
I guess I like their burgers. Haven't been in a while.
I'm in a burger slump at the moment. There is not a single burger joint burger that I day dream about having. I guess I got burned out as I got old. Still like the ones I cook at home, though, but I miss sitting down and having someone bring me a burger I like.

Friend,
I, like you, care deeply for our friend, Owl. I took your words to heart and made TulaneLSU’s Top 10 Mexican eateries in Houston. If Owl has not read it and issued his stamp of approval please be in contact with him.

To update, you drove past two pizza places on your way into town, Pizza Hut and Hungry Howie's. Hungry Howie's is pretty good for what it is, but the Pizza Hut is not worth mentioning.
Royal Donar is no longer there.
Johnny Brusco's has one of the better pies in town. There are two locations. Baumhower's also has a good reputation for their pizza, but I haven't had it.
Arrica's, Mellow Mushroom, and Little Italy are still there and still doing well. I think you were a bit too harsh on Little Italy.
I suppose it's true elsewhere too, but wings and chicken fingers have kind of overtaken pizza as the go-to for cheap, late night eats. Auburn has its share of those kinds of places...Guthries, Zaxby's, Foosackly's, Rocco's, Tenda Chick, Willie's (local fave), but no Cain's.
