Cut up and cook 2 or 3 pieces of bacon saving the grease in the pot, remove 2/3rds of the liquid in the can, dump the can of peas in the pot, simmer for about 45 minutes, stir occasionally, add a tablespoon of sugar and serve. By themeselves or over rice.

Is there anything better than that? Awe Hell No!

I used to say the same thing, but Trappeys canned BEPs changed my mind on that.

I learned how good they are this past new years.

All the black-eyed peas were sold out. Fresh were gone, frozen gone, canned gone except for the jalapeño version. Nobody had touched them.

They really weren't even remotely spicy so I am not sure why people were spooked.

Cooked some sausage with onions and garlic, tossed that is with the peas to simmer a bit and Boom derailed the hell out of my diet eating way more than I should have.

Too much sodium for my normal diet, but I thought they were pretty tasty.

I love purple hulls. I made a big pot of them on Sunday with some of the summer crop from last year. Delicious. I can eat a bowl of them, like soup, for a meal.

I don't like rice with peas...as in mixed together. I don't like the two textures together.

I don't know why I don't like those two textures together, but I don't. Now, I will definitely eat rice and gravy as a side to the peas, but not mixed together.

I like to add jalapeno peppers to the purple hulls, sometimes.

I've had the canned Trappey's with pepper. They're just okay, but they need some doctoring, for sure. I'd rather make my own from dried peas.

My wife buys these occasionally, when it is her turn to cook, no they are not spicy. What bitches me is that the can is 2/3 water, c'mon man, put some beans in there.
