I will tune in. I hope he has some real restaurants to talk about very soon.

Fundamentally, that's the problem with him. He has no real knowledge or appreciation for an evolving food scene.
It's the same South Louisiana food culture, over and over and over and over again. Alot of yatty old frickers calling in, wondering if some place is still open or a bunch of "remember when"? shite.
Take Vietnamese for instance. Well nowadays this is mainstream dining but to Fitzy, it's probably all snakes and dog meat.

He has hosted an entertaining, educational, and classy radio show three hours five days a week for 45 years. That’s 35,000 hours of food wisdom, story telling, and friendship. In the meantime, he has written a multitude of books on New Orleans cooking, dining and general life. He has hosted weekly eat clubs and done more charity events than we will ever know.
His food exploits and contributions are innumerable. As he enters the autumn of his career, the sea urchins and crabs are coming out in full force to pick at his fraying edges trying to get a pound of flesh or sliver of his sinew. He may not be always on the cutting edge as he was for the last 40 or so years. Part of that is he has an enormous wealth of past experience and wisdom he is still trying to share. I’d rather he talk to us, his beautiful audience, about a meal 25 years ago at a fixture of New Orleans dining than review a trendy new restaurant that opened three months ago and will likely be gone in a year. One is New Orleans. The other is anywhere fairy dust.
There isn’t a single critic, Philositos, or radio host of any stripe who has been so consistent, consistently great, and devoted than Tom Fitzmorris. He is a living legend. Most will only recognize his greatness when he is gone. But I say, those of us who can need to wake up and give thanks for his greatness today. Of all the media celebrities in the world there is none I would rather dine with or spend an hour with than Tom Fitzmorris.
You should check out Yelp! The site offers some equally good food connoisseurs opining on their experiences at local restaurants.
I will warn that some of the revuew details could become a bit salacious, such as one review commenting on the rough undersides of tables that have been guilty of tearing undergarments.
That only enforces that these are quality, content filled, reviews.

Buddy D.
But on the subject of sports, TulaneLSU. Allow me to share with you the moment Tom Fitzmorris began to sour for me.
A few years back, I was listening and a guy called in asking Fitzy for his ideas on tailgating. Either having a tailgating event catered or maybe putting together some interesting or unique things on his own.
Well Tom's inner a-hole emerged and he began to pretend to not know what football or tailgating actually is.
For you see TulaneLSU, Fitzy has an obvious hard on for such things and in the process of speaking over the caller, telling the caller he has the wrong show and asking him "What is this tailgating and football you speak of?" Fitzy went out of his way to embarrass the caller and make him feel stupid. When the call ended, he had a good laugh at a fan's expense.
After hearing this, I was left with the very distinct impression Tom was given one too many atomic wedgies in high school and never quite reconciled with it all.

You nailed it.

Friend,
Tom Fitzmorris hosts a show for erudite lovers of food, gentlemen and gentlewomen of distinction. In no such realm is discussing something as crass as sports tailgating welcome. I also wouldn’t call his fine show to pollute it with discussions about Domino’s Pizza, though it is food and I quite enjoy it. There is a time and place for many things. Sports and sports tailgating are not welcome conversations for The Food Show. They never have been and I for one am grateful, that in a world of cheap, fleeting, plastic entertainment and diversions, Mr. Fitzmorris has remained above such peasant topics like sports. Sports have three goals: striving for excellence, teaching teamwork, and physical fitness. Talking about adults playing sports is one of the most debased things I can imagine. His condescension toward people who want to talk pointless rubbish I applaud. His refusal to expand an audience by cheapening it with talk of sports is worthy of our greatest praise. No one in America, nay, the world, has elevated the art of food discussion as had our Tom. He is the greatest New Orleans celebrity since Satchmo.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

Re-read the post. That wasn't happening.
The caller was looking for creative ideas on serving a tailgating menu or catering options. There was no discussion of sports.
Discussing a meal plan for tailgating is no different than discussing one for an anniversary, birthday party or bridal shower. These are all social food events.
Fitzy was a big, veiny pecker that day and he needlessly embarrassed an obvious fan of his show. A very low brow and insecure move on his part.

He's at his best when he's talking about a ham baked in cocola. His signature dish.

Part of the greatness of Tom’s show is he doesn’t lower his standards to talk sports or sports tailgating, not even during a Super Bowl run by the Saints or an LSU championship season . That’s for the ESPN and the other radio shows. His sanctity is refreshing. He offers a venue where, when all the rest the town is abuzz with pointless sports and tangential sports topics like tailgating, we talk of the genteel and grand. It is this very holy trait, that rather than detracting from, greatly adds to and enhances his show.

Like he looks down on Rummel even though they took him in and let him graduate after being thrown out of Jesuit.

I think this is going to be a wonderful move to WGSO for Tom and Mary Ann. I truly wish them all the best. I don’t feel like the HD-2 station was adequate enough for his burgeoning listening base.

But he will discuss roastbeef poboys and fried oyster loaves. The fried this and slathered that of the common man.

Like a precooked ham baked in soda.
Look man. I can appreciate your defense of him but we all know his show really is nothing more than a bunch of old yats, calling and asking if he remembers some obscure restaurant from their childhood. Other than a alot of "remember when" shite, there really isn't much else to his show.
The caller I speak of was asking for ideas about a creative or unique tailgating menu. This gave Fitzy an opportunity to show his quality but what does he do? Well he drops trou and shits all over one of his own fans. And not only was this guy a fan, he was fan enough to actually call in.
Low class move TulaneLSU. Real low class.

There’s nothing wrong with reminiscing on restaurants of yesteryear. In fact, going through our current pandemic, I bet a lot of people are going to want to be nostalgic and reminisce. He’s definitely going to be a fresh voice for this.

No there isn't.

How can he be a "fresh voice" for nostalgic reminiscing when that's almost all he does? He has the local radio market cornered on nostalgic reminiscing.
A change in venue won't make Tom relevant Paul. It will take a change of ideas for that to happen.

Agree to disagree.
I’ll be listening on May 4th.
Can’t wait.

Our boy Ian, the unknown food critic in past greatness, needs to step in as the new voice of Nola food.

Friend,
Do you get amusement and playful chuckles by all these critics of The Critic complaining about his show? An entirely self-made man has turned a bachelors degree from UNO into celebrity, multiple book publications, income well into the six digits, and the longest running radio talk show hosted by one person in the world! 45 years of excellence on the air and people here think they can do it better. He knows exactly what he is doing.
No one does or knows New Orleans better than Tom Fitzmorris. Has anyone seen the state of culinary criticism in other cities? New Orleans is where it is food wise because of Tom Fitzmorris and his mentor, Mr. Collin. In fact, I would love to make a documentary movie about his life and times. Though it would never do justice to the miracle that he is, future generations deserve to have a slice of this heaven we get to witness five days a week.
Yours,
TulaneLSU
P.S. We will never have an adequate replacement once Tom rides away. We can only savor every last moment we get with him.

A wise man once said. "What we are now, is not what we once were".
You're an enabler TulaneLSU. People like you are why Tom will go the way of the Ivory billed Woodpecker.
You and so many others like you, who refuse to change, grow and adapt will send poor Tom off to failure. For no other reason, than that he represents a past you can't surrender.
If he follows my fandom or others like me, he can enjoy a career renaissance before he heads off to that great chef's table in the sky.
If however he pathetically clings to the past like you and so many others, then he can fade into the grease fog of obscurity.
You'll have a hand in his failure TulaneLSU.
