NOLA.com has an article about a restaurant in NC that banned children under 5. I knew the comments would be worth a look, and they were.

This one was the best:

"I think this is looong over due: CHILDREN DO NOT BELONG EVERYWHERE! The parents who bring their screaming children into upper end dining establishments are selfish. It's unfair to the other guest and it's unfair to the children themselves. There used to be a food writer here in the city who advocated taking children everywhere---Tom Fitzmorris. He's dead now but that used to be his position.!"

"He always was a dique ". That's funny.

But regarding kids and reading those comments I think most people just like to bitch. As I've said before my parents took all 7 kids out to dinner and when people asked why he said because his kids knew how to behave. I've done the same with my kids and they know how to behave. But I've been going to dinner all my life and I've got to say seldom do I see these raging lunatic kids these people complain about. Fast food? A pizza joint? Sure from time to time but "Caruso's Fine Dining?" Not so much. I mean "traditional, classy and intimate" I don't see a bunch of kids at anyway.

I don't mind well-behaved kids. I raised one and had no issues at restaurants.

One trip to Ruffino's, a two year old pounded out his rendition of Led Zeppelin's Moby Dick with his fork and knife until their appetizers came. I was not happy.

Tom's recent post is about Port of Call.

I'm struggling to understand this explanation of how they came to serve a burger and baked potato combo.

quote:

What I didn’t know is that it was originally posited as a Polynesian-style steak specialist, with a bar serving the same kinds of drinks you would have found at the extinct Bali H’ai. But one day they ran out of baked potatoes for the steaks. Instead of substituting fries for the baked, they offered burgers instead of steaks that night. The combination had such impact on the customers that the burger-baked potato combo became the signature dish–even though they continued serving the steaks.

They ran out of baked potatoes but they somehow kept serving them. How? And they weren't out of steak but decided to serve burgers? Why? Does not compute.

What's worse is when adults do this at Asian restaurants with their chopsticks.

It's simple.
They ran out of steak potatoes, but they had plenty of hamburger potatoes.
So they just sold them.
The rest, as they say, is history.
