Thoughts on Health Food chefs, i.e. Bethenny Frankel & Lisa Lillien (HungryGirl)

IMO, I think that both have great recipe ideas that are lower calorie, higher fiber, etc. that are good for people who are trying to diet or eat healthier. However, my problem with Lisa Lillien (known for her HungryGirl blog, cookbooks, and Cooking Channel show) is that she sometimes uses too many artificial ingredients and sweeteners/fillers (she uses a lot of Splenda/Equal, uses Shiratake noodles , fake egg/cheese, etc.). As for Bethenny, she uses a lot more 'natural' ingredients, but her ingredients involve a lot of shopping at Whole Foods or Fresh Market at times (i.e. Oat Flour). I also like how she made the Skinnygirl Margarita without all the calories (have yet to try it though). But, I will say that I think Bethenny is starting to look wayyyy too thin and needs to lay off of such strict dieting and eat a burger every now and then.

Overall, I admire what both chefs are doing but sometimes it's better to eat a real slice of pizza or a real burger that doesn't have fake veggie patties or a slice of pizza that doesn't have fat free faux cheese .

Didn't Frankel sell Skinny Girl for over $100 million?

Seems like a great way to be able to afford to shop at Whole Foods all the time.

Yeah she did sell Skinny Girl for $100 million. But us common folk can't shop at Whole Foods all the time...

i never eat anything that has fake shite in it. Splenda, fake butter (aka vegetable oil spread ) turkey bacon, faux cheese, etc..

the health nuts can have it. i'd much rather put natural things into my body.

Skinny Girl Margs taste ok for the calorie count, otherwise it s@cks, not very tasty.

Smart gal to sell the brand. She, like Palin, will rake as a tv celeb, without needing to actually produce a viable quality product.

I think I read it was for 120 million. She usually comes across as a very down to earth girl. We'll see how long that lasts now. I've read reviews of her book and apparently her method of staying skinny is to eat one or two bites of food. She eats whatever but only in very tiny amounts. I could never have one or two bites of a meal and say I'm done. What a waste of food.

That's my problem too . I think it's better to have a meal a week to splurge on and have a dessert with. Why just take one bite? I wouldn't be able to control myself. From the diet books I've read, most have said to have a meal a week that is 'whatever you want' and even to have your favorite dessert with it, and that if you eat right the rest of the week that it won't hurt you.

Had it a couple of weeks ago - it's pretty good.

I would've MUCH preferred to drink that over the resort margarita's which were waaaaay too sweet and overpriced.

Frankel and Lillien are not the first and certainly wont be the last who make a buttload of money selling weight loss secrets to the American public.

Stay tuned for the all foie gras, all alcohol fueled Blackened Out 12 Step Program to Looking Thin, Feeling Great, and Gaining Respect.

This makes NO sense to me. Emeril got $52Mil (I believe) from Martha Stewart, Inc. for his name and likeness - which seems to have WAY more staying power than some "it" reality show chick who annoys the shite out of most non-retards.

Yeah. She was actually an all natural food chef first, before she became a reality tv star.

Emeril's deal was more complicated. Seems like Frankel divested herself of ownership of the SKinny Girl drinks and lifestyle label. Whereas Emeril's deal had Martha Stewart Living absorbing the Emeril product lines, in which he still consults, gets various fees from, etc... Emeril still owns all of his restaurants. This explanation may not be 100% accurate but it his deal with Martha Stewart was not a one time transaction.

That's a terrible, terrible way to eat.

My grandma tries to advocate that kind of eating. She eats very little, like 2 bowls of cereal per day and sometimes she'll have a sandwich or something with a little protein. She isn't fat and won't get fat but she has to take all kinds of vitamins to get her nutrients.

Yeah, but that's it.

Frankel's deal did not involve 'her', but her product, which is good.

So, at this point, it matters not who created it - that's not why one of the largest spirit companies in the world pulled the trigger on it - what matters is that yes, short-term, they will get some play off of Frankel's name, but the product is good and needed in the ready-to-drink market.

I understand the appeal to have Skinnygirl Margaritas in a bar or restaurant where a margarita is so often served with a nasty mix. I don't understand why you'd bring it home. What's in the bottle is the exact same as a good, simple marg that is plenty easy to make yourself.

Ready. To. Drink.

No matter how simple something might be to some, to others it's a pain in the arse.

To you, making a margarita might be a very easy thing to do, but I know I'd prefer to just open a bottle and pour it over some ice.

Besides, you inevitably run out of ingredients, which means a run to the grocery at an inopportune time, you're too drunk to run back, or you're too drunk to run out but still do.

Again, I say frick it, just open the bottle and pour.
