seems like often people crave a great, simple food more than these places and even many chefs will claim among the best food they have ever eaten was not in fine dining places.

They do claim this; and it may be true. But chefs are fairly biased because they work in fine (or at least something close, obviously there is no chef at McDonalds) dining establishments all day most every day, so it seems natural they would gravitate to something outside of that area. or even be desensitized by their work experience and not be able to enjoy it as much as a non-chef would.

of course i would think many chefs enjoy doing out as well.

5. Brocato's
6. Guy's Poboys
7. Byblos Market on Vets
8. The Balcony
9. F&M's (although I much prefer Grits' bar)
10. Cafe Du Monde

Three all-time greats. Gimme an oyster bo-boy, cheese fries and some flounder, STAT.

ETA: AT's always left me with multiple party scars and bar gravy all over my clothes.

Brunings would have been numero uno if I was including dead guys. Sid-Mars would have been in there somewhere too.

I can only imagine what Brunings' would cost to insure these days. One thing is for sure, they'd have to sell a lot of Dixie beer to cover that cost...

I'm glad to see Uglesich's getting some love in this thread. What a quintessential New Orleans restaurant.

I have that cookbook too and I cherish it.

Having said that, the book was poorly edited and put together. Not all of the recipes were checked for errors in quantities, etc.

It's more of a history book for me, since I wasn't around for the restaurant.

I am using this mostly from childhood and early years. I just haven't had as many experiences there. I do think it is great and should me on my list, but it is is not as important to me.

I've been to Mother's once - the first time and the last time.
I was suckered into paying $15 for an extremely average oyster po-boy.
