My wife brought me the menu from that place.

Also, I've never been to Alinea which I hear is crushing right now as well.

I was there two years ago. An amazing experience. I recommend you make the trip. Achatz is out there. If Stella! is in that league then it is top notch.

Folks, all of your advice is much appreciated. Lots to consider.

I was in NYC with my wife over the weekend. Had some great eats: Per Se, Momofuku Ko, Convivio, Balthazar, 5 Napkin Burger, Blue Smoke, and Yankee Stadium. We were all over the map and price range.

Our waitress at Momofuku Ko was from NOLA. She recommended a bunch of places. Due to the wine and other beverages, the only one I can remember was Jacques Imo's. What's your view on that place?

I prefer Dick and Jenny's over Jacque Imo's, but its decent.

What is this 5 Napkin Burger you speak of? Headed to NYC in Sept.

I heard about Dick and Jenny's in another thread. Why is it good?

5 Napkin Burger:

LINK

It's on the corner of 9th Ave. and 45th St. It was recommended by our concierge. Great, very casual atmosphere, and very tasty drinks. But the burger was absolutely amazing. I had the Original. And by far the best burger I have ever eaten. The couple beside us at Ko, told me that it is high on his list, but that his favorite is at a place called Shake Shack. I don't know why. Hard to imagine it could get any better.

Very cool little place with an eclectic menu. No reservations so if you don't want to wait get there by six. Other great places Uptown are of course Commander's, Gautreau's, Clancy's, Lilette, Vizard's and La Petite Grocery. Get out of the quarter a little and see the real New Orleans. From your list from NYC I would say you would really like Gautreau's and Lilette.

There a lot of good posters on the board who will steer you to the right places. Jaque-Imo's is in my opinion highly overrated.

If you eat in Baton Rouge, go to Ruffino's. The Chef is from New Orleans and the atmosphere on game weekends is outstanding. You don't need to go out because good people will be there partying all night long. If you want to go to a restaurant where you might be one of 4 tables in there and have no atmosphere go to Galatoire's. Ruffino's will provide great food and the ultimate experience.

Hello again everybody.

I have been looking into the places and suggestions noted by all of you. Thanks a lot. I'm closing in on a tentative itinerary. Thought I'd run it by you. Bear in mind this is tentative, that we will be trying to pack a lot of stuff in, and focusing on getting a Louisiana experience. Criticize or suggest away, if you think I am headed in the wrong direction:

Thursday, October 8th:

Arrive early afternoon. Check into Hotel (Marriott on Canal St.). Head to late lunch at Mr. B's. Carriage ride tour around New Orleans to see the sights (is this appropriate for 6 dudes?). Late afternoon drink at Napolean House. Back to the hotel briefly to get ready to go out. Charles St street car to the Garden district. Pre-dinner drink at Columns. Late dinner (9:00'ish) at Commander's Palace. Hit the bars suggestions?).

Friday

Quick breakfast at Cafe du Monde. Brief tour of Katrina damaga en route to golf. Tee off at TPC Louisiana around 11:00/11:30 (I'm told this appropriate). Post round drink and clean up. Drive to Dutchtown for Destrahan v. Dutchtown game. Try to check out some Platantions along the Mississippi on the way. Would also like to get a quick bite at a small town restaurant if we have time (suggestions?). See the Dutchtown game. Drive to Baton Rouge. Late night supper at Parrain's (any other recommendations of another small town restaurant are welcome). Drinks at the Chimes.

Saturday

Tailgate. Thanks to those who have already invited us to their parties. I'll follow up closer to game day. Game. Partying after game.

Sunday

Breakfast (any suggestions in BR or en route to the airport?). Drive to airport. Fly home.

What do you think?

PS: we gave a lot of thought to places like Stella!, August, and other high end places. We are leaning towards Commander's Palace because it seems to be classic NOLA/Louisiana, and not as much of a date place. Correct me if we are headed in the wrong direction on this.

I don't often do this for anyone other than close visiting friends (or young college girls I am trying to sleep with), but considering your unusual circumstances, I would hate for you and your friends to get some half arse tour from a carriage guy that will point out Hard Rock Cafe and Bubba Gump while ignoring important historical and cultural aspects....thus, I am offering my services for free. It will be the best city tour of your life. Let me know if this interests you and I will calendar it and we can be in touch....

Roerto's may work for your small town restaurant...

For your purposes, Commander's in the proper choice...drinks at Columns Bar is a must pre or post dinner...if you are into beer, Bulldog is a couple blocks away from Commander's....50 beers on tap alone.

Go to Baton Rouge on Saturday morning, you only need one night there.

TA puts together some pretty good itineraries, so use his recomendations for sure.

Mr B's was very disapointing when I went a few months ago. BBQ shrimp were overcooked and the gumbo served was cold..

Palace Cafe was surprisingly awsome when I went 2 weeks ago.

We can walk around the french quarter some, but we should also drive as many of the best areas of the city are outside of the confines of the Quarter...

My car only seats 4 besides me...we will figure somehting out. 2-3 hours should cover the whole city driving and walking...

I would suggest Brigtsen's. I think Frank is incredible and his restaurant is a definate top 5. Different menu daily.

Roberto's would be a good fit for after a high school football game. Houmas House would be nice as well.

this thread is so great and illuminates what's amazing about the people of south LA. i'd wager that if you go to any of the tailgates that people have invited you to, that the food will be amazing and so will the company. It never ceases to amaze me how generous people are with their tailgate food.
