Most the beers at Bulldog can be found at any number of bars around the city. Ave's appeal is that it offers beers that generally aren't available anywhere else in the city. If you're looking for a night out on the town, Bulldog is usually a better bet (ie if you want to find girls), but for 'beer mavens' there's a reason why they like Avenue.

Also, Mid City BD > Magazine BD.

Agreed with all of that. I'm at Ave Pub tonight and there are at least half a dozen beers on draft here you'll never see anywhere else.

And yes, if you're looking to hook up you don't go to ave pub.

k, what's another place in New Orleans with an even remotely comparable draft selection? Its easily the best draft bar in town. Sorry they don't carry Russian River

Are some of you not even reading my posts in here? I said it was a great bar multiple times. I'm just asking where all the hype is from because the draft selection wasn't mind blowing material. I figured it was the bottles so I asked to confirm.

I was hesitant on making this thread because people get defensive about their watering holes.

I guess another reason the draft selection didn't seem as great is because I dont drink porters, stouts, and similar styles. They could have the best stout in the world that no one has and I would have no idea. I am an IPA, Belgian, pale ale drinker as of late so nothing stood out as being a woah I can't get that at my local bar.

Once again, its a great bar but the things people are touting are the stuff that I havent experienced

I think what we're asking is where is all this hype you speak of?

i like the building and atmosphere. The special events are great but I really enjoy drinking there when it's slow.

He's really just trying to say he doesn't like that people can smoke in there.

I guess its a combination of people talking up the pub while downplaying some places I go to in BR. Really creates the feeling that damn my places suck compared to the pub, when in actuality, the gap isnt that far between the bars. Bulldog, Cove, Pelican and Chimes are my beer places in BR.

There's definitely hype and rightfully so. Just got to the Beer Advocate website, a bastion of beer mavenry, and read all the glowing reviews for the place from people from all over the country. Beer nerds score it really high and place it in the world class category.

It's definitely one of the best beer bars in the southern US.

Well, sorry to tell you .. but Avenue Pub blows the Chimes out of the water.

So, you take it as a personal affront?

Decent spots. Pelicans' tap selection didnt' really impress me when I went and the food was overpriced and the atmosphere was sterile. I dig the Cove. Bulldog is alright .. but you have to put up with a lot of douchebags at times.

Exactly. Problem is, it seems, is some people feel those accolades are misplaced.

I think there is definitely a significant gap. And it's not that those places suck and I pity myself when I go there, although I have my pet grievances with each. It just all the ways AP goes above and beyond what they do. Some of which won't be noticed by a casual craft beer drinker.

If we are strickly talking beer. But to be fair, they aren't really trying to be same type of establishment. I love both places for different reasons.

I think those people likely aren't full-fledged craft beer enthusiasts.

Chimes has always been more of a food place to me. They just happen to have a good beer selection. I rarely ever go there to just drink.

Nothing personal. I was talking about how I spend a good amount of time at these places when there is this place in Nola that apparently blows them all out the water.

I agree with your pelican assessment but I'm not including food in this discussion.

As far as bulldog goes, you only deal with douchebags on Wednesday nights. If we're talking about atmosphere and feel to a place, bulldog is ahead of the others mentioned. (BR location)

It's in NOLA, open 24 hrs a day, and on the St Charles street car/ parade route. If everything else at any other bar in the southern US was equal those 3 things would give A Pub the edge.

And you can smoke downstairs most of the time. I guess living close by to the pub makes it easier to fully appreciated it. Especially when it comes to middle of the week beer rollouts.

Whoever said they like to drink there when it's slow made a fair point. My first time there was an afternoon when just a few people were there, and I had a great time.

When we went Friday night, it was slammed so the experience was a little different.

Plus the bartender, while very sweet, wasn't actually employed there so wasn't as detail-oriented as some explain. I overheard him tell someone he works at a bar down the street and he was just helping out because they're short staffed. His shirt was that dickies mechanic style so I'm almost positive he is a bulldog employee. Doesn't bother me at all because the small details aren't as important to me.. As I'm certainly no true maven. But figured I should add in that we were under abnormal circumstances with the place being packed shoulder to shoulder and having a bartender in unfamiliar territory.

Spent a couple hours there last night. After slogging through a couple beers that were only rated in the low 90's on Beer Advocate and enduring the company of an insufferable douche that actually BROUGHT HIS OWN BOTTLE TO THE BAR, well, it's safe to say I won't be back.

Oh wait. Avenue is a great time. It gets no hype it doesn't deserve. The tap selection is always good and at times great. I've never walked in there and been unable to find a beer that was new to me and more than likely something I couldn't find elsewhere.

Darn it. Maybe next time I can be underwhelmed by it.
