Storyville is just getting remodeled as I understand it. That antique store has been saying "for sale" for the last 3-4 years.
Hookah place? see ya
NY Bagel? see ya too.
Some attrition always happens in a small restaurant/shop city. Especially with the large amount of openings around town lately....it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
Magazine St.=90% locals...so its amazing we have five miles of beautiful shops, restaurants, and bars...even discounting Quarter/dowtown, it is impressive that we support so much small business down here.

Storyville initially said remodeling, but after 4+ months of zero work being done and missing the summer and football season, there are now different signs on the windows. that place was terrible anyway....way, way overpriced for the trash they put out of their kitchen, and the drinks were outrageous for a place with a terrible setup/flow. Guess other people shared the same opinion.
and yeah, it will be interesting to see what happens. Just reading that article a month or so back with Frank Brigsten talking about having to borrow money to cover costs for the first time ever really raised my eyebrows...and the sentiment of the article was the he was not alone.

My post was partially facetious....but Martini's dire predictions of Depression are a bit much I think. This is just a recession, and NOLA and BR were named top 10 places to ride it out.
It's with tongue in cheek said but we haven't seen the worst part yet. All of 2009 will put many places out of business especially in the retail and restaurant business. This is not a dire prediction. It's simply economics and no matter how well BR and NO are situated it will happen and it is happening all over the area now. Many new construction projects that were on the drawing board are now mothballed and this is only the beginning. Many retail establishments are gone already and watch the first quarter. Many are just trying to make it through the holiday season to soften the blow.

+1 , if retailers haven't been socking away some reserves to keep them floating, the ships are gonna start sinking in the first quarter of 2009. As for loans, lines of credit, and borrowing more to keep things rolling, the small guys won't be getting help from the banks either. (they see losing the initial as bad, and giving them more cash to lose as making the problems worse)

Man no love for the hot dog stand I'm proposing?
Don't you all realize we are in a depression?
Been saying for YEARS we need NATHAN'S FAMOUS down here. Nobody in the industry listens.
A good plate lunch place...yes we has some good ones...Frank's, etc, but we need a place that knows how do do REALLY GOOD Rice-n-Gravy. Sadly lacking in BR. All the local places INSIST on using long grain rice and gravy mixes...or so it seems regarding the gravies. MEDIUM GRAIN RICE PEOPLE! But nobody listens!

1-In and Out Burger (West Coast)
2-Papaya King or Gray's Papaya (NYC)
...that would take 'fat' to a whole new level in this city...and we've got 'fat' baby!

My mom told me she read this on msn.com or something the other day. I had to laugh in her face. You are highly underestimating the potential for a severe recession. That aside, the NOLa economy (and particularly the restaurant industry) depends highly on tourism, which is the definition of discretionary spending. The U.S. consumer is being taken out to the woodshed, which is bad news for a tourist driven economy. Unfortunately, it would surprise me if we didn't see a large number of closings. Go look at the RevPAR and other various hotel sector economic indicators for the past six months. It going to get uglier everywhere, and that includes here.
Sorry for the doom and gloom, but that's just reality.
