I don't think that beignets are really anything
They can be dessert, appetizer, side item, breakfast etc...
That being said the specific kind that are being talked about in this thread would be breakfast pastries IMHO

I haven't tried the Acropolis one but the Baklava at Jamila's is excellent.

Oh and in case you forgot, while New Orleans has roots in many cultures, it does not mean we should stick to all their customs. Can you not accept that New Orleans culture treats beignets as a breakfast food? If I wanted to live like the French do, I would move to France. Maybe you should do the same.
