Cliff Notes version: The market is struggling, almost shut down, has a new operator, and is losing money.

I remember when this was being rebuilt and then it opened. It was sold as a community food market / food hall.

However, when it opened and I saw the vendors in there, I thought, there is no way this will work in this area.

I know the area has gentrified, etc, but it's basically pretentious food trucks (as silly as that sounds) inside a vendor space, that is a haul to get from if you are in a tourist area, and has a horrible parking situation if you want to drive there.

It's not a terrible concept... but the location for this concept is about as bad as it can be.

Since all the local shrimpers are complaining about the low dock prices, maybe they can turn it in to a seafood market.

I went to several of these around San Diego a couple months ago. One was food truck style casual and the other upscale. The upscale had a brewery located on the top floor. There was a common bar in the middle with limited menus from 7-8 restaurants or you could dine in at each restaurant and get the full menu. A group of 8 and we ordered from 7 restaurants. A very tasty and enjoyable experience.

They've tried 3 different locations for this "concept" in New Orleans (I think there were even two or three more sort of half-arse other attempts at it as well) and none have really panned out.

I guess there are any number of reasons these things didn't really take off here. You could probably argue demographics, parking, lack of consistent foot traffic, and an entrenched culture that just prefers going to regular restaurants, as some.

Went to one like that in the Raleigh area, and it was a great experience. Morgan Street Food Hall if I remember correctly.

Been following the story and just kind of feels like an ego thing by the CR guy. Almost like he thinks he is popular enough to juice it up. I just don’t see it

Tax credits and grants paid for all three.

Look at where they were located. All of them were in terrible areas to take advantage of tax credits.

Something like this in the warehouse district or in the new river district would make a killing.

The Pearl District in San Antonio has something like this and it's great. But it's part of a larger complex of things to do.

Did Sydney Torres finally finish this idea for the old Cricle Food Store on Claiborne Ave. I know it was in the planning stages a while back but not sure if it ever got finished. Not that I'd venture into that area of town other than to drive past it on the way somewhere else.

It used to be regularly packed in the beginning, but I have not been in a long while.

One of the three was there.

TWO separate entities tried to run it and neither could survive.

I honestly don't think it's a location thing in NOLA.

St. Roch Market

When I was a little kid I used to go there with my grandmother. She would go in the back where they kept live chickens in cages. She would point out one, the guy and he would grab it and my grandmother would feel it to see if it had plump breasts. When she decided on one, they would take it and butcher it. She didn't believe in frozen chicken.

The market is losing money by the original owners standards. The

The concept can definitely work where it is because the lease price is so low. If the city retains the same price with the new owner.

The new owner wants to work with bringing vendors back. Which they seem willing to do.

Charging +$3500 and a portion of the sales should get the orignal owner charged with robbery. It's no wonder everyone left and then opened within blocks of the market.

Bold take. I’m rooting for the guy, and I think he will be successful.

I’m not rooting against him. Just an observation. Just changing the vendors isn’t going to revitalize the place.

To be fair, the second entity didn’t run it like Auction House where outside vendors were brought in. Top 5 worst meals of my life…not surprised they folded after a few months.

Food choices, service, inexperienced restaurateurs, menu food availability, and pricing. Too many things to go wrong to get steady repeat business.

Too far walk in bad neighborhood to get much French Quarter business.
