Hey guys,
I'm still new to this board so pardon if I'm misunderstanding anything.
My dad and I ended up deciding to get a Weber Kettle grill.
I've been looking through posts and seeing things about sous vide (reverse searing, if I'm correct) cooking.
I found a couple water ovens on Amazon that I could buy myself (since my dad is buying the grill).
Do you have any recommendations on what type to get? Is it great for steaks? What foods do you like to make with it? Thanks

Anova or Joule
Sous vide really shines with thick cut pork chops IMO

There are a lot of idiots on here that will make fun of the technique. Disregard them (even though at one point the jokes were funny).
The anova or the joule are both solid options. The best thing I can tell you is to search a few threads here and search YouTube for chefsteps perfect steak and chefsteps briskets. They have a lot of souls vide info.
I recommend it. If nothing else, it is a cool gadget to show off and your steaks will be perfect every. Single. Time. Without. Fail.

also threw some pop tarts in for 9 hours that my kids said were the best they've ever had.
Did you reverse seat them to crisp them back up?

Yep. 10 seconds at 1500 degrees on my quadruple walled ceramic. Had to let them rest for 15 minutes after that though.

A month huh? What did you use as the tub? Literally a bath tub or something else?

Had a sous vide steak for the first time last week. Cooked with butter and rosemary them seared at the end. One of the best steaks I have ever had.

Amateur.
You don't have to rest after sous vide.

Great for steaks. Great for pork loin/tenderloin.

The ones recommended by others are immersion circulators which can be used in any of your vessels. If you're looking for a water oven itself as mentioned in the OP, I own one of these and am very pleased with it...Sous Vide Supreme.

I bought this unit in 2014 and it's served me well. It's come way down in price. I bought it for $430 and I see Amazon has it for just over $300 now. It holds the temperature within a fifth of a degree. Don't get the cheaper Demi which is prone to damage, the Supreme is all stainless steel.

Like every cooking method, there is a place and time.
I own an Anova that I'll use once or twice a month. Mainly if I cooking a large piece of protein and I know another component of my meal will tie up the oven preventing a sear and oven finish.
I will add that I don't care how "great" of a cook you think you are, you can't cook a steak as perfectly as you can with an immersion circulator. Holding protein at the precise temp for a specified time then finishing will always produce perfect results. Time is the factor here...good enough can often beat out perfect if the difference is an hour.

Well said.
Degas. Do you ever find with the supreme that you can't fit larger pieces of meat? I have a buddy that has one and that is his biggest complaint.
