Hey all, I have a friend who was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer of the esophagus. He can only eat "smooth" foods--nothing that can get caught in his throat going down. I'm stocking his refrigerator and freezer with blended soups that were recommended by the great and kind cooks on this board. I'm going to the hospital with him tomorrow for the discussion about "treatment" options--but it's incurable and fast. I went over there last night to watch the game and he told me basically he just wants to live as normally as he can while he can (39, divorced, no kids). He wants to hold off on pain meds until the end. A poster on my soup thread suggested high quality vanilla ice cream and booze milkshakes for anxiety and pain--and he really loved that idea. He loves small batch bourbon--any favorites? Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance.

Eagle Rare is available in most places, smooth and has a minimum burn and at a good price point. I would start there.

Thanks so much Wick--I'll pick some up tomorrow. ABC stores closed in NC on Sundays.

I didn't know you were in NC, you could have an issue with supply there.

Got it. If I can't get it, I'll post and ask for your next best option. I really appreciate the help. Thank you.

Another suggestion is Basil Hayden’s if it’s available. It’s a lighter proof (80 proof) and very smooth.

Hopefully the milkshakes come out great whatever you choose to make it with

drockw1,

Just wrote it down. Smooth sounds like the ticket here.

Thanks so much for your help,

Eagle Rare would be my first recommendation as well.

If you see some Garrison Bros and don't mind expanding the budget it's a great bourbon.

Grasshoppers might be soothing . Shot of Creme de menthe , shot of Creme de cacao and 2 scoops vanilla ice cream mixed in blender.

Four Roses makes a good small batch.

I second this. The lighter proof makes it so much more approachable and drinkable. It's definitely my favorite.

Sorry to hear about your friend’s illness. Cancer sucks!!!
As far as drinks go, I make my wife a cinnamon rum milkshake. It’s bluebell homemade vanilla, a splash of milk, a handful of Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal and a couple shots of cinnamon rum. I use Caneland but that’s probably not available in NC. Blend until smooth and top with cinnamon sugar and more cereal if you like. It’s pretty dang good.

Elijah Craig small batch is noticeably superior to Eagle Rare in my opinion. Less than $30.

pdubya,

Thanks. It really does suck. I'll get some cinnamon rum too--sounds good with ice cream. Two recipes from you guys--you're wonderful.

Enadious,

I've seen Elijah Craig small batch in the ABC store here--so I know our decidedly unimaginative ABC Board have permitted at least one that you guys recommend.

Thanks for your kindness,

Cajun B,

Thanks a ton. Maybe if they have a few of these, I'll just buy some pints and surprise him. I think he'll get a kick out of trying what y'all like.

Get him a THC tincture and mix some in too. He should also check out Carl Schaubhut‘s blog.
