Not sure if there's that much of a difference between the two. To me, Watercolor is much nicer and more comfortable. There's tons of stuff for the kids to do at Watercolor - that's why we like to go there (ages 3, 5, and 7). There's camp watercolor (swimming/arts and crafts), lake activities, tennis club, the beach club, etc. Plus, each unit comes with bikes, so the streets are filled with kids (and adults too) riding their bikes. It's such a great atmosphere that we don't mind being off the beach somewhat. Seaside doesn't have that feel to me - it seems crowded and not as kid friendly. Just my 2 cents.
There's a definitely somewhat subtle, but in my opinion much different aesthetic between the two places. (is that contradictory?)
Personally, I prefer Seaside's, but I can understand the appeal of Watercolor.
I think you can get your kids in the watercolor kids deal, from seaside.

I agree. Except for the Inn, we both like Seaside a bit more than Watercolor. There was just a more vibrant, active feel. That said, both are awesome and I don't think you can go wrong between them.
However, we did NOT like Rosemary Beach at all. Place just felt uptight and the quasi-European aesthetic just didn't work at the beach. I'm sure the houses are nice, but we much preferred Seaside/Watercolor.
The jury is still out on Alys Beach. It looks really interesting and original, but I'll have to wait until it's more fully developed before making a call.

Karl Rove lives there.

Really? Why does that not surprise me.

i've said this before on TD. I do not understand the buzz around this place. We visited friends there once, and, from what I saw, the beach was small, the village is damn near claustrophobic, and I didn't even see a beach club.
If you have access to all the Watercolor amenities while staying at Seaside, then I agree that there's not much of a difference between the two other than the "newness" of Watercolor.

Oui. Flew into GPT to see family the first day, then drove over to Florida (flew back from VPS).
I liked Vrazel's but everyone in there was mamaws and pawpaws. Made me feel like I was at Piccadilly. I don't think a lot of young people around here like fine dining.

You all can keep your Watercolor, Seaside, and Rosemary Beach. I am, and will always be, a Grayton girl. Long before the yuppies descended on South Walton – there was only Grayton. You can have your crowded beaches, kids’ camps, and khaki-and-white photo sessions. We’ll stick with our non-matching umbrellas that we set up ourselves, “calendar of activities” that consists of sitting on the beach with a drink, and dinner of boiled crabs that we caught in the lake.
However, we will continue to avail ourselves of your frozen yogurt and import cheeses.

That cracks me up when I see the families trotting out to the beach to do that. I just look at the dad and think how much twat he must be getting promised to go through that.

If you read my posts carefully, you'll see that we do the watercolor thing for a few days because the kids love it. We then move on down to a house in the santa rosa/blue mountain beach area for an experience similar to yours. It's the best of both worlds.

Truly. I was just kidding - I love jogging through Watercolor and shopping in Seaside. Grayton just happens to be home (for a little while at least).

I'm officially jealous.
Actually, the only thing on that whole 30A stretch that really strikes me as out of place are those horrid gated Watersound developments.
There's something to be said about the whole odd mix of everything else.

Ate at Bud & Alley's taco bar last week and it was very good. I recommend the pork taco's. Chips and guac and salsa were good. Nothing fancy, just taco's and beer. I enjoyed it.
And went to Cafe 30A, which was very good as usual. Sea Bass was incredible. Duck appetizer was very good as well as the beet salad.

You lost me right there.
I kid. Seriously though, when I go on vacation I prefer to stay in hotels (versus houses) so that I don't have to do shite for myself.
Now, as a way to live everyday life, I agree with you completely.

We are staying at Silver Shells in Destin in about a month. I'm gonna find out how far a drive it is to cafe 30a

Depends on traffic, but probably about 45 minutes or so, I'm guessing. IMO you should hit Fish Out of Water or Caliza before Cafe 30A.
Stayed a Silver Shells several years ago. It was really nice.

Great review...but I have to ask .....
Please tell me it was a white burgundy.

The wine list was fantastic and the sommelier helped us pick a flawless Burgundy for our meal. We split the shellfish platter for an appetizer. The snapper ceviche (don’t ask me how that’s “shellfish”) was awesome. Entrees were the snapper and the Florida Hopper Shrimp. Both were very good. Desserts were excellent as well, with the soufflé being the real stand-out. Service was perfect.
Please tell me it was a white burgundy.

Nope. Why?
ETA: And please don't say "because your entrees were seafood" or something common like that.
