Sales guy said they were the best, sharpest, etc. etc. blah, blah, blah. Demo went well until he said base set was like $1299.00.

What I've always heard is: Not a bad knife. Maybe even a great knife to some. But extremely overpriced. I refuse to support any type of MLM on principle due to their misleading and predatory tactics, but if you think they're worth it, go for it.

My .02 is Cutco = crap.
Get yourself a good Henkel's or Wusthoff set, a set of quality wet stones, a strop, and learn to sharpen your own knives.
You can get a very nice set of quality knives for significantly less than $1300
My Henkel's have lasted me about 12 years now. I can get them shaving sharp in about 10 minutes each, and they hold an edge for several months with only a touch up on the strop every few uses.

Good knives but far too expensive for my taste. At least 4 of my extended family members, when attending college got the idea selling Cutco Knives would be a lucrative sideline. At their price, not many family members bought them.

I'm not a professional chef. Figured I didn't need em?

Way over priced. Don’t let that lifetime warranty crap get you excited. I’ve had my Chicago cutlery chef knife for 20 years, and it’s still cutting just fine.

I have the steak knives and like them alot.

If you at all cook, you need at least a decent set of knives.
You can handle probably 90+% of all your needs with a single good quality ~9" chef's knife.

We got a set for our wedding and since we cook a lot they get a lot of use and have turned out to be our favorite thing from the registry. Their warranty is awesome as I'll be able to keep this set for the next 60+ years.
Expensive, yes, but we've really enjoyed them

Two of my son's friends tried it a few months ago, they each lasted a couple months, only. We bought something from both of them. They are expensive, but what we have are four or five good pieces, and that warranty is no slouch. I had friends who had Cutco from fifty and sixty years ago, and the warranties are still honored.
But to make a big set purchase or starting out? No. Way too expensive.

Then your .02 isn't worth much. They're good knives, but they are relatively overpriced. They are a crap value, but not crap quality.

Cutco uses stamped steel for their knives. They are objectively inferior to forged knives. They are crap value, crap to use, and crap to sharpen. In summary, they are crap.

My parents 18 year old set of Cutco tells me they aren't crap. My parents suck at maintaining things, and those knives are still holding up very well.

sorry your parents overpaid for inferior knives.

Did I not say they were overpriced? Reading is hard sometimes I guess.

I cut my finger on the steak knife during the demonstration.

my classification of cutco as crap wasn't a personal attack on the judgment of your parents. No need to get all pissy.
