Order pork everywhere you go. It's out of this world. Even the brother jimmys BBQ spot (chain) was out of this world.

Be VERY careful where you go, even in broad daylight, that place makes NOLA seem crime free.

This comment is complete bullshite.

Go into Old San Juan and walk around. Go to El Morro. It's the old fort. I've probably been 10+ times, and still find it pretty awesome. There are a ton of places to eat and drink around there. There is a great craft beer bar kinda close to the fort. I was shocked at the beers they had on tap threre that we don't even get here.

Go to the tapas bar in the hotel el convento. Order a pitcher of sangria and some of their sausage plates.
Go to the forts. Ride the trolley. Walk around. Old San juan is awesome.

Highly recommend Jose Enrique and Pikayo. And if you're renting a car, definitely do the Pork Highway in Guavate.

I wanted to do that but it seemed like a pain in the arse to get to. We mostly stayed on the Eastern side of the island (Fajardo, Vieques) and OSJ.

Go to Barrachina Restaurant, where the pina colada was invented. We went 5 years ago and it was really really good. I don't even usually like pina coladas.... The forts are all really cool too. We only had a day there before we boarded a cruise ship but San Juan was pretty cool.

It wasn't too bad. I will say that driving in OSJ is a nightmare. Next time if I rented a car I'd stay in Condado.

We rented a car in Condado. We drove to the eastern half, stayed a few days. Then we drove back and had the rental company drop us off in OSJ. Didn't need a car at that point.

I'm no expert obviously but I do remember dining at a place called Ostra Cosa. That was 13 years ago. If I bothered to remember the name of the place (consider it was also my 21st birthday and I erased a few brain cells) it must be pretty good.

They had a nice courtyard area outside. Very fresh offerings and some good seafood.

Take a gander at the photos and see if it might interest you. I don't know if it would be advisable if you weren't a seafood person.

We were there last weekend and I completely agree with the Jose Enrique suggestion. They don't take reservations, so when we went on Friday they took my name and number then called when the table was ready. We walked around the square and had a few drinks to pass the 1.5 hour wait.

Also, we made a day trip out to Culebra for snorkeling and beach time on Sunday. Long boat ride but Flamingo Beach was well worth it.

OSJ is great and safe. Hotel Cervantes was wonderful. Little Italian place called Sofia was a hidden gem.
