There was a truck this last Friday in Lafayette selling what they said were Ruston peaches. Big. Between baseball and softball size. Hard not ripe.$9 for 7 peaches. That doesn’t seem right. What do y’all who know say?

I don’t know but seems kind of late for Ruston peaches, been getting some good peaches from the store lately (probably from California or Mexico????) big and pretty , hard but let ‘em sit on the counter for a few days and they ripen up

Agree. I think Ruston area peaches are likely done by late July. Perhaps a Lincoln Parisher can confirm.

I never trust those roadside truck guys. All their melons are allegedly from Saline, all their peaches are Ruston, tamales are from Zwolle, and all onions are Vidalia. bullshite.

Last of the Rustons this year was mid July. All Ruston peaches this year were VERY small-crop failure due to weather.

FYI: sad fact. There is only one peach farm left in that area and he’s down to only about 75 trees. We are likely near the end of a tradition and way of life. I for one will miss it greatly.

Ruston Peaches

Rumor has it that Mitchem's lost a ton of trees and their production is so low they were shipping in peaches from other areas.

So peaches from Ruston aren't even Ruston peaches so I doubt the ones in Lafayette are either.

They had a few of their own peaches this year. They were tasty but very small. Took several hours to peel a box of #1’s. As I said above, down to about 75 trees. Un the last few years they have had to bring in peaches to satisfy demand. The EPA under Obama elinated use of a certain fungicide. The result was almost immediate development of root rot which decimated the orchard. He’s been replanting with “rot resistant” trees but it’s a hard slog.

The sad part is that he’s the last. I remember multiple orchards all around Lincoln Parish up into the late’80’s and Mitchem’s was huge. Acres and acres of peaches. Not anymore.

Mitcham once controlled root rot with the chemical methyl bromide, treating the land before new trees were planted. But the federal government began phasing out the use of methyl bromide in 1995, saying it damaged the ozone layer.

I worked at the Peach Orchard my freshman summer, the older man Mitcham told us on the first day to "eat all the peaches you want for free".

I did and have never really liked them since ha ha He knew how to break people from wanting to steal them

I've never had a good yellow meat peach. They are hard and never ripen good. I've had good results with white meat peaches. They ripen easy and are sweet and juicy.
