Rum House Review

I was really looking forward to eating here. Unfortunately, I doubt I will be back. We went last night, at 7pm, there was a 15 minute wait for a table for two. 45 to sit on the patio. The dining room is very open so, it was almost like sitting outside. First thing, it is loud in there. Like, really, really loud. Which is fine, it's a fun place.
Look over the menu, order a tea, soft drink and queso. Not a specific complaint to the Rum House, but why are places charging $2.75 for a soft drink?! Anyway, queso was a very small bowl of something resembling Velveeta. Very meh, but it's melted cheese. I ordered the Red Curry Shrimp and my friend got the ribs. Waitress was very frazzled, with lots of large tables. I didn't get the idea that they had quite enough servers on hand.
The food came out quickly, and both dishes were just very underwhelming. Mine had 8 large shrimp, in a curry sauce, with coconut rice, a "roll" and some black thing, that was maybe a fried plantain. The sauce was bland, the dish didn't have much flavor. My friend said his ribs were bland as well. His dish came with a mound of tasteless brown mush. We still aren't sure what it was.
We ordered the banana bread pudding and we thought at least we may end on a high note. Nope. Very overcooked and dry. Also, there were two slimy brown things, which may have been bananas but tasted like an olive?? I don't know, by that point, the combination of the noise and not-so-great meal just had us ready to get out of there.
The meal, with tip, no alcohol, was $60. There are too many good restaurants in BR to choose from. So, I went for the novelty of a new place, I guess. I wish it had been better.

Nice review. Props on giving an honest assessment and not just blindly buying into the hype or giving them a pass because it's swarming with hot women.

swarming with hot women.
Considering the reviewer appears to be a woman, I'm guessing that wasn't a big consideration.

I did notice that there was a tremendous amount of talent eating there, in the 25-35 range.

you should try it again in 6months when they've settled in

I think it's safe to say they aren't cooking any dessert in-house.

Place opporates like a chain, but with better viewing.
Solid, honest review.

Erroneous.

I still can't decide if I want to waste a solid evening and $75 on this. Tigerdroppings tells me no (like every other main stream restaurant) but everyone IRL says it's decent, granted most of these people have no concept of decent food.

Kind of curious what this is.
Just looked at the online menu - Cornbread Dressing. Tasteless mush, pretty good description of cornbread dressing, I'd say!
And hey, I like good scenery while I eat!

I have never gone to a restaurant that I can remember in it's first 6 months of being open. Seems like there is always things that need to get worked out. I'm hoping for good things. From the crowds I have heard about it seems they will make it in the long run but I will be looking forward to it in a few months.

I have never minded going to the one in NOLA when my wife wants to go. Its not awe inspiring food, but I have never had the experience the OP had. Then again I always get tacos. I would be in the its decent crowd.

Every time I've been, we've been out of there for less than $40 for two people, but we usually only get the taco meals and some alcohol.

I think I'd hit up $2 tuesdays before anything. I love some decent tacos

I honestly haven't had a bad meal there. Yeah, it's not a 5* gourmet place but the atmosphere is fun, the food is good IMO, and of course da womenz.

agreed. not something im dying to go get but they bring out a hefty plate of nachos and some decent tacos and i generally leave happy (and with less damage to the wallet than the OP references).
i wont wait an hour for it.

ribs -- $16
shrimp -- $16
queso -- $6
2 soft drinks -- $6
total $44? unless the online menu is off you are a generous tipper for a meal you didnt like (was looking to see what the mush was anyway).

You made the mistake of not getting the tacos.
