Can’t remember which tent Ducote was at but didn’t remember thinking it was near the best. I loved the seafood gumbo that won last year. Also thought the Turducken gumbo was quite good. Manda was up there as was Crawfish app.

Some people feel that competition has been rigged over the years towards certain sponsors or people. I didn’t even attend this year so I have no dog in the fight. Just saying how many feel

I had more good than bad this year.. but I probably only tasted 10-15. Still yes- surprising how many people make a bad product and just roll with it.

The one at the Govt Taco tent was a great stew type dish, but it wasn’t necessarily gumbo. And the fellow who made it shut down anyone who inquired about the flavor, as if people were trying to steal his family recipe

It sounds like they should have a category for traditional chicken/sausage, one for seafood, then an open category where you can do the crazy shite. Have guidelines for the chicken/sausage and seafood then let the open category be whatever they want.

They do. There were only 3 seafood gumbos submitted. There were a bunch of chicken & sausage and slightly less "cajun" gumbos submitted. I got the opportunity to judge this year. I can say that if the judging is rigged, then it's done in the compiling of scores. I got to judge all 3 seafood gumbos, then 6 of the chicken and sausage ones. There were at least 24 judges there and each gumbo was tasted by 8 judges. There is literally no way to know which gumbo belonged to which team.

I only really enjoyed one of the 6 chicken and sausage gumbos I tried. There were about 3 others that were averaage to fine and 2 were downright bad. There was a clear winner in my mind of the 3 seafood gumbos.

I didn't stick around to see who won, and there's a good chance I didn't even get to try the winning chicken and sausage gumbo given the number of entries.

I'll also say that, in general, I had much better gumbos at last week's Watson gumbo cookoff.

EDIT: I didn't get to try any of the "cajun"/open category ones. I was told there were some pretty good ones with interesting ingredients like brisket.
