Not very surprising. There wasn't a great market for Square Root, although I wish it succeeded.

Chef Phil is a good dude. I am sure he will succeed wherever he goes.

No surprise. NOLA couldn't sustain a place like Square Root.

I read about the closures...it's a reminder that a good & lasting restaurant is as much a play or theater event as it is a place to eat. Root and Square Root never seemed terribly welcoming or hospitable to me, so I didn't go back. Unless you're a hotel restaurant with an endless stream of new faces, you've got to have repeat customers or your business will fail. People want to be dazzled by food, but more than than, they want to enjoy themselves. Managing to capture both (innovation as well as comfort/familiarity/welcoming hospitality) spells success. Root, et al never seemed to figure this out.

Service trumps food. People go to high end restaurants for several reason, but the act of eating is on the bottom of the list.

Most chef centered restaurants will fail.

The concept & pricing doomed them from day 1. I’m surprised they lasted this long as I never hear(d) them mentioned in any of the circles I run in,

At least I got to experience Square Root. It was as close to Alinea as you'd ever get in the South. Best of luck Chef Lopez.

whoa, i went to a party upstairs at Root on Friday. I guess this explains why they ran out of a bunch of beer.

Sounds like the same fate as Stella!

So high cost and quality wise that it is hard to maintain in perpetuity.
