commanders should make that dipping oil at your table like Macaroni Grill. it would add class to the dining experience.

FWIW, if any of you care to look up this restaurant's nutrition menu, you'll never eat there again anyway.

I eat at both.. There is a time for chains and a time for local spots. Chains are generally good for these nights:

Me: What do you want for dinner?

Her: Doesnt matter...

Me: Im hungry for....

Her: ehhhhh

Me: Oh shite lets go somewhere where I can get what I want and you can get what you want...

You cant do this at a most local places. But chains have much larger menus and dont require a reservation or dressing a certain way..

I went there about 3 or 4 months ago and it was awful. It wasn't my choice, as someone was having some type of going away dinner or something like that. Granted we had about 15 people at our table, half of the peoples meals came out wrong, and the other half had cold food. One girl didn't even get her meal until almost everyone was done. I think that will be my first and last time to go there.

It's sort of sad when one considers the dearth of locally owned "neighborhood" type restaurants in BR.

I would rather hope, it didn't have to be that way.

but it really seems that any city that isn't pedestrian, public transit, or bike oriented will be greatly lacking in that regard.

You can still get a lot of places in NOLA by the streetcar, walking the quarter, biking etc....esp within neighborhoods. My car doesn't move on weekends on a fairly regular basis.

I see the connection you're getting at.

I still don't understand, logically, why it has to be so.

There are many great neighborhood places in BR.. BR never seems to get credit for them.. But many nights I may want a steak or something else any my GF wants southwest eggrolls from Chilis.. Now I have to say places like Macaroni Grill its Italian and doesnt serve much else so that doesnt fit what Im talking about. I would rather Little Village or Ginos but thats also going to run me alot more and I would need a reservation most times. Chains are useful for last minute date night plans.

i don't know. But it does seem like in places like BR, and most of the nation, that places are developed differently. All residential together, all commercial together.....with a few trendy new condos with a sushi place, gym, and dry cleaner nest door.

How is it even possible to have a "neighborhood" place in CCLA, Bocage, Shenandoah, etc when it seems only residential development is allowed in the neighborhood. the only hope was downtown or north BR, and that died a long time ago.....like most of the country.

As you become a more sophisticated diner you will easily see the vast difference in the chain experience and eating where a person's life dream is on the line.

Is that condescending? Maybe. But most of us "sophisticated" diners have been there. When I was in my 20's I thought Steak & Ale was great. I joined a professional organization because the monthly meeting were there and the company had to buy me lunch. As I got older and more experienced, New Orleans is a great place to learn, I got more discriminating and much less likely to go to mediocre restaurants, chains or otherwise.

For a city its size, Baton Rouge is one of the best restaurant cities in the country. We are not completely inundated with chains, go to Birmingham and you can see the strangulation by chains, and we have pretty good cuisine diversity.

You can live Downtown and make the walk.. and I used to live not far from Ginos

Ok how about Pinettas or DeGuilio or Pocorello's or NY Pizza??

I consider these neighborhood places even though they are on major roads.. They are near subdivisions..

Oh I understand this. Just don't understand why this is more conducive to having folks dine at a Chilis and Applebees, rather than a Mandinas or Joey Ks.

well we can walk to Joey K's, that's the main reason i go....seems to be the same for some others that i see walk home from the restaurant. If that was a Chili's, i would eat there sometimes too just for convenience.

But, it's much more convenient for me to eat at a locally owned neighborhood joint in NOLA, so i do.

Chilis is a quality chain.. Southwest eggrolls and 2 for 1 drinks are ok in my book.. I would rather eat there than Mandinas anyday.. (not a big Mandinas fan obviously) BR had Mandinas too it didnt catch on.
