Spend some time in the area a good bit (family) and I'm still am not sure about the restaurant scene there...I realize it's not a NOLA/BR/Lafayette but I'm sure there are some great places I'm missing. can anyone suggest a few places there?

Robbie Gs on jackson extension (seafood)

Phillys Pizza on masonic (dont go to the one on coliseum. It is not good at all)

Portabellas at calvary baptist church for lunch

Anchors on macarthur is legit (steak/seafood)

Beef o bradys on coliseum

Porkys (but dont get the cracklins. Everything else is good) google search porkys its hard to explain where it is.

Little cajun house next to subway in the mall parking lot

Los portales (mexican) across from the old walmart (get the chile pablano. It is not on the menu but it will make your knees weak)

Alex doesnt have fine dining per se but you can find good food if you know where to look.

Eta: the previous posters had a lot of good places too. I was trying to add to their list.

Lol @ dq. The one in alex has the best hamburger in the whole damn city. The half pound flamethrower beats any other burger alex/pineville has to offer. That is sad.

Eta: ive heard bad things about julias. Anyone have an informed opinion on that place? I love los portales. How does julias stack up?

What is the name of the "high end" hotel in Alec? The restaurant is supposed to be lights out.

Alexandria/Pineville

Make sure you go get the philly cheese steak at critics choice either on murray st. or rue verdon. I go there everytime i go back to visit my parents. Owned by people from philadelphia for 20 years. still the best philly cheese steak ive ever had.

others id recommend:
spirits
suburban gardens - really great homemade italian, get the italian platter
outlaws bbq
paradise catfish in ball, LA rightoustisde of pineville on hwy 165 is awesome. I used to love going here as a kid and a young adult.
TUNKS CYPRESS INN - besides critics choice, this is the only other place in alexandria that you HAVE to go to. I grew up right next to it. Beautiful view of kincaid lake and kisatchie forest which is unrivaled by none in the state of LA except maybe mariner's in natchitoches.

Alexandria also has some fine dining:

Bistro on the Bayou- next to the aiport. good food but a little overpriced and I know the guy who owns it

DIAMOND GRILL LINK - you gotta go eat at this place. It is a beautiful little restaurant for alexandria in the old Schnacks building on third street. Dowtown alec is pretty cool imo.

Red River Grill - it's in marksvill but definitely worth the 30 minute drive. You should go here just to hang in marksville. Marksville also has a casino and some good cajun bars.

eta: Harlows Doughnuts in Pineville are awesome but I always enjoy shipleys in Alexandria too

YES, its still open and still family owned. I used to go to gimancos all the time. I loved that place until it fell under new ownership and really went down the shitter.

I was hoping you would eventually chime in. Yes, the cottage is the only place I would add to my list. Usually when Im in alexandria and looking for lunch my options are: spirits, the cottage, critics choice, or BJs pizza. Johnnys pizza is for noobs.
