Restaurants charge a fee for credit card use

Went out to dinner recently, and after we were seated, the waitress told us if we were paying by check or credit card, there would be a 4% charge added to the bill. There was nothing posted anywhere alerting us to this fee before we were seated. I have heard this is becoming more common, just never had it happen before. 4% is not much added to the check, but how common is this and what do other restaurants charge? And any opinions or experiences?

There was a big thread on here or the OT about it not long ago.
I’ve never seen this. I use my credit card for everything. If they are up front about it I guess I wouldn’t care.
If you are a cash only restaurant, you aren’t getting my business unless it’s a small family owned kind of place. That wouldn’t be often though

Credit card fees raised their rates in April. Businesses are dealing with the rate hike in different ways.

Just had it happen for the first time a couple weeks ago. Fezzos in Lafayette. Didn’t notice a sign and waiter didn’t mention it until I handed him card

Yeah, I’d be grateful that the restaurant is only charging you a fee if you use a credit card. Most places just bump up the price of their food/drinks

Yeah, let's take a place in the sticks, with a run down building, charge FQ pricing, and accept only cash.

I don't mind paying for convenience, but it gets me how a $100 transaction cost $4 and a $10 transaction costs .40.
Has to be the same amount of work/resources involved.
Just charge a flat price per transaction.

Did I frickup my maths or something?
Or just in reference to the credit card companies and their treating all dollars the same since they are 'financing' the purchase?

I saw this recently too at a place.
I had always thought that part of the deal with agreeing to allow payment by credit card at your business establishment was that the credit card companies contractually obligated you to accept their surcharge and not pull this shite.

There was a supreme court case a couple of years ago that was kicked back down to the lower courts who then ruled that states banning convenience fees was unconstitutional. That opened the gate for merchants to charge these fees. In Texas, the law says they have to clearly show a price for cash and a price for CC but probably no one is enforcing that. Also, the fee is not allowed if using debit cards.

Maybe I’m missing your point, but the total fee is based upon the transaction amount. The average merchant services rate to the vendor is about 2% plus other bullshite interchange fees that’s usually recouped once a month in 1 bulk debit from the vendors bank account.
It doesn’t work with a flat fee per transaction, or that’s not how any merchant services company I’ve seen handles business.
For instance, a plastic surgeon has some chick come in and wants a face lift, and she swipes her Visa card, and the rate is 1.5%, and it’s a $10k procedure, $150 is going to the credit card processor.
There are industries that give cash discounts for this reason.

Adding:
Have you ever seen some establishments say “minimum purchase” when using a credit card, that’s because some processing companies also charge a per swipe fee along with a service charge on the whole amount of transaction. That might be $.35, somtheu want the minimum purchase to usually be over $4-5.
Not saying I agree with any of this crap. Just trying to explain.

If you were in business, you would not only understand but agree with this. If you allow no minimum purchase, the store would literally be losing money on small items.

I understand that. I was just lamenting that it seems there should be a flat fee instead.
As someone who has an Amex I have become used to carrying cash because of Amex apparent need to charge more per transaction (thus vendors not accepting them)

Think you missed what I was trying to say.
When I said “Not saying I agree with any of this”
I meant the way credit card processing fees and companies work.
I agree with minimum purchase amounts by the institution so they don’t lose money.

It's 2019. Sorry restaurants, it's the cost of doing biz. I'm a millennial. I don't carry cash. Crap, I don't even know what cash looks like.

That makes absolutely no sense.
