going to a chain restaurant in Austin is like going to one while you're in NOLA, its known for great food. dont go somewhere you can get in other cities

Daruma Ramen on 6th is damn good. Some of the best food we had was from the food trucks.

I went to Franklin on a bachelor party and it was well worth it. Unlike other ridiculous lines (hot Doug's in Chicago), this wait was as fun as possible for such an affair. Think of it as a tailgate. We got there super early and started drinking some good beer out there, made friends, got drunk, had a blast. Got out of there around 2 or 3. Can only speak for my friends, but if we hadnt done Franklin, the only thing we would have done instead up until 2/3 would be sleep and drink in our hotel before going out. So what else would you be doing instead that early?
To each his own, but you can tailgate anywhere. I've done it too. It's fun, but I have a lot more fun at an actual tailgate. Personally, I'd rather go explore Austin, go swimming at the Greenbelt or Barton Springs Pool, check out Zilker, rent a boat on Lake Travis, or go to the many events scheduled each weekend.

La Barbeque is the best kept secret
A secret that still has a 2 hour wait.

I'm not an Austin expert but I'll list some places I went to on my last trip that I would recommend.
Easy Tiger for lunch
Salty Sow for happy hour
Swift's Attic for brunch
Bangers for sausages and beer
Craft Pride for beer
East Side King for late night food truck grub

Where has this place been all my life? Heading down to Austin this weekend with the family and I am definitely trying this place out.

My mom just sent me a review from Biscuits and Groovy on Duval. Said it was excellent.

Geez folks
No Qui?
Former food truck wizard and top chef not to mention James beard award winner Paul Quin has one of the best restaurants in the country in Austin.
barley swine and odd duck are both incredible.
I prefer La BBQ
Sandy's burgers

A few places that I enjoy are
Peche
Bangers
Botticelli's
Vox Table
Terry Blacks (if you'd rather wait 5 minutes instead of 1-2 hours)
I was going to eat dinner at Arro last weekend but the seasonal menu looked underwhelming so I just grabbed some apps instead. The lobster bisque was ok and the frog legs were too bland.
I still need to try many of the other places that have been mentioned in this thread.

Have you tried Daito?
Looks like an interesting Japanese place. I'm heading to ATX in October and wanted to try it

Has one of the best Old Fashions that I've ever had. It's $10, but worth it every once in a while.
