My son will be a freshman this fall and will have his move in day this Saturday. I'll be up there to help him with his dorm and go to a few meetings that they have for parents. My question is I would like to take him to a decent sit down restaurant that evening. He'll get enough of all the quick stuff once school starts. I'm not really looking for anything upscale like Ruth's but, some decent restaurant ideas would be appreciated. I'd probably use these recommendations as a reference for when I go visit him during the semester also. I want to be able to have some places to take him to switch things up during the semester from what he would be eating during the week. We aren't real picky so we would be open to any restaurant recommendations. It could be anything from seafood to Mexican to Italian as long as it is good. Thanks in advance for all of the recommendations.

If it’s his first night in BR, take him to a place that will say “hey kid, welcome to college!”

I recommend the Chimes by campus

I second this. Place looks rough on the outside but food is great.

If you want Italian... DiGuilio Brothers is very good. Another hole in the wall looking place on the outside

The Chimes is a great choice but I would not want to go there on move in day. It's going to be packed. I say go a little away from campus and try Elsie's or Overpass Merchant.

Agree--take him someplace away from campus, he'll get plenty of the close campus stuff on his own.

I figured that would be extremely crowded. We live just outside of Covington and go to Chimes there regularly. He's stayed in BR a few times with friends over the summer so it's not his first night. I just kind of wanted to go somewhere a little different.

Those are all some really good choices. I'm kind of leaning towards Superior Grill or Parrain's personally. I'm going to keep this in mind and we will figure it out on Saturday. I appreciate the recommendations.

I'd recommend Parrain's!

And Roberto's, like many people said already.

Superior is mediocre Tex Mex, nothing special about it. Parrains is consistently solid.

This. Get them to put some fried oysters on your salad. They fry a great oyster. Seafood stuffed bell peppers are very good, as is the rest of the menu. Go very early or wait til 7:30 or 8:00 when it starts to thin out a bit.

We went to Parrain’s mid afternoon and it wasn’t super crowded. He was starving so we just went a little earlier plus he had made plans to go out with friends tonight. He played it safe and got a catfish platter. He said it was really good. I got the andouille encrusted fish which was speckled trout. It had a crawfish, andouille, mushroom cream sauce on the side and was served with garlic mashed potatoes and bread. When they brought it out it just looked like a really good dish. My son’s eyes got big so I knew he wanted some so I told him to try it and he was like holy s*** that’s good. It really was delicious. I ate about half of it because I was getting full so I asked the waitress to box it up for me. My son thought I was crazy until I told him that was going to be his late night snack. We will definitely be back there again and I think he’ll try something more than fried fish next time. Thanks for the recommendation.

Awesome!

I’ve never had a bad meal there, and have tried pretty much everything on the menu.
