Do you even bother buying IPAs that are more than a few months old? Or does it depend on what kind/brewery or if it's a higher end one? I've seen posters here mention beer being old or not good anymore and just wondering.

My rule

Single IPA - 60 days
Double IPA - 90 days
ABV over 10% - 120-150 days
Pale Ale- 45 Days

now this does not apply to all beers but it is what I apply to trading

If its a Triple IPA, basically a Barley wine then I dont mind if they are that old. Otherwise I dont buy them over about 60 days old.

I assume you're asking how long do you have until an IPA's best traits fade. Asking how long they "last"....technically quite a while. What td said above is a pretty good indicator list, but it really depends on the beer and your taste. I've found some to be more resilient than others, but my personal general rule is 2 months kept cold is best. Up to 3 months can be ok, but beyond that I feel I'm not getting the best qualities from an IPA anymore. I'd had a yr old Sculpin the other day and it was still tasty so don't sweat it, its beer enjoy

I try to buy within a month, mostly because I know it will probably be another month before the whole pack is consumed. 60-70 days is about my limit.

I will buy super old IPAs and put them in chili. Flavor is great and I feel like I give them another life

If not kept cold, then cut all these by half the time.

Room temp is not the issue, direct sunlight is

I disagree. Light is bad, but so is 70+ degrees.

Meh, I've had some straight from the warehouse (Ghost) that I know didn't get under 70 degrees.... As long as they do not continue to go in and out of sunlight they're fine.

Now if out in 70+ degree weather for a week or so I totally agree with you.

I’m talking about finding an IPA that has been sitting on a store shelf for 30+ days that has never been kept cold.

Then no problem for me since I know most grocery stores are set for 75 degrees... I mean that is room temp and it has not altered the taste to the point where it is noticeable

I find that most IPAs are really nice in the 2-4 week range.

If it's a DDH IPA, I'm more in the 3-6 week range.

If it's a DIPA, I find that many fall off hard after a month and they start getting sweet, but there are always some exceptions out there.

If it's an ABV over 10% I probably don't like it anyway, so who gives a shite?

Point is, my system is completely different than anyone else's, and once you drink enough of them you'll know about where you stand on things as well. And figuring that out is half the fun!

Every system is different depending on taste and the beer they are acquiring....

kind of why I started my rule, if I'm trading for an IPA/Pale Ale I want to know the date. I did get burned and someone sent a 9 month old IPA as their trade.

Neither a guy who was suppose to send Focal Banger and sent another beer instead since he couldn't get Focal Banger like he promised.....

Worst I've ever been burned is by a guy I had to send to BBT and he sent me two year old beer after he was called out.

Great responses. Why do so many places store these premium beers out in room temp instead of cold?
