I am under 1500mgs of sodium
then you're paying careful attention to your sodium .. the average atkins person just pops open a can of green beans and eats the whole thing with his two 8 oz pieces of chicken breast because the carbs are low ... they don't realize that was just a 1250 mg meal right there if they don't read labels ... chicken, turkey, and beef run about 65 to 85mg per 4 oz. and a lot of people think "wow, i can take down two 24 oz ribeyes for dinner ! cool !!" and then, bam, 1000 mgs right there ... it happens .. i have to watch this stuff closely for my mom who has celiac disease and my dad who is a diabetic with high blood pressure ...
i realize some medical professionals are questioning whether or not cholesterol in foods really impacts long-term, permanent levels and that it all may be hereditary, but i still need to see more conclusive findings on that ... for all we know, the american dairy association lobby could be behind that ..
quote:
would imagine the average Atkins diet is much lower sodium intake than what we were all eating before simply because all of the food other than cheese is fresh
you know the average joe isn't eating fresh veggies .. they're popping them out of the can and not noticing 490mg of sodium per serving ..

This can be said about ANY diet. You singled out Atkins as being high sodium and canned veggies can and are used with ANY diet.
So once again, ANY diet can be high in sodium if you don't watch what you eat.
The MEAT part of atkins is not high sodium unless you dump heaps of salt onto your meals and even then it is still lower in sodium than ANY fast food trip.
Hell one trip to Taco Bell can set you back 4500 mgs of sodium, so once again, Atkins is far better for sodium than what most of us were doing before.
Hey, it has been a year since my last blood work. There will be some proof in the pudding when I get my blood work done in April or heck, I might get it sooner. The numbers will tell the truth.
Although I think I have weird blood because even at 323 and eating fast food ALL the time, my blood work actually wasn't bad last year.

Is this the picture you've painted in your head or is this something you've seen a study on?
The Atkins book tells you to eat fresh green, fresh salads, etc. If an Atkins dieter read the book, they more than likely won't do this. I haven't touched any canned food (except for tuna) since I started. I eat 1 piece of meat with 1 cup of salad and a light vinaigrette.. No way that's unhealthy.

i agree with that .. unfortunately, too many people have been programmed to load the steak up with a cajun injector or bathe it in some salty marinade and then salt it ...

i did that because people start reading labels and focusing on the net/impact carbs in everything trying to stay under 20g a day ... then they seen 2g or whatever in a can of green beans and fail to notice the sodium .. i just say this because i have two friends that both swore by atkins and lost tons of weight on it .. but both now have high blood pressure after 6+ months on it ... they both were told to loose weight by their doctors for blood sugar reasons with normal BPs prior to going on the diet ...

Once again, that has nothing to do with Atkins. Your friends simply did not follow the diet correctly. As Hulk said the diet warns against high sodium and tells you to eat fresh Veg.
You are essentially blaming the gun because the gun owner looked down the barrel and pulled the trigger to see if the gun was loaded.
Not following the proper steps could lead to failure or massive sodium increases on any diet.
I've warned about canned food and sodium since this thread started. I used to be a canned food sinner.
It was so much easier to make red beans with a couple of cans of beans and a can of blue runners. Then I would season like I normally do. I imagine those red beans were nothing more than giant sodium bombs. Especially considering the sausage is already loaded with sodium.
I may backslide at some point but one thing I will stay away from for good will be ALL canned food. It simply has too much sodium and most cases it doesn't even taste like it has that much.
Cad? Where you at? You usually chime in when someone makes a negative comment about Atkins. You alive? Or did you have a bad weekend and you FEAR MY 201.5?

i'm here
i DID have a bad weekend..ex decided not to take the kids and it blew up my plans for 6+ hours of bike riding with friends. i ended up doing shite i needed to do around the house that i've been avoiding..but the penalty is that i munched the whole time
and the 'exercise' i was getting was not quality exercise..it was climbing ladders, trimming trees, cleaning out the kids drawers (and mine), etc. etc. the entire weekend was consumed with this and kids brithday parties & sleepovers blah blah blah.
in short, 257/205.5/185
i was extremely pissed at the ex..trying to let that anger subside and refocus this week.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MYTH!
you've given yourself the best present anyone could POSSIBLY GET...100lbs+ gone between this year's bday & last.
hulk..keep at it buddy! you rock and we're behind u 100%
rag..you do make good points but again, atkins is a great way to 'fine tune' any diet..just ask myth..he went back on it a week ago and dumped 4 stubborn pounds lickety split. i say balance in all things..use it as a tool. hell i did a couple of fasts that were almost as effective..but i dont necessarily advocate doing that long term either. these are all tools/tricks/hacks, whatever you want to call them..but the bottom line is less weight.
its physically impossible to have hypertension levels, choloestorl, etc tat are as bad once you've dropped 100lbs. obesity leads to all kinds of bad stuff. if atkins helped you get there and you were careful about the processed crap (i dont touched canned anything personally) then its a good thing.
meats, eggs, cheese, dairy, etc. are much much healthier for you than any so called fat-free or manufacutered 'faux food'.
STICK WITH STUFF YOU CAN IDENTIFY IN NATURE!

that's my point mainly, cad .. it isn't a "lifetyle" like a good ole move more, eat less calories diet would be .. that's all .. i can certainly see someone mixing a month or two of atkins in the middle of a long term diet to break a stubborn plateau .. no doubt about that ... but on atkins long term you are depriving your body of things it badly needs .. like fiber and good carbs ... but as a "slump" buster temporarily in any diet i can see it .. sure ... just don't wanna see hulk disappointed when the time comes and he realizes he can't sustain this diet long term .. that's all ..

It's not going to be a lifelong diet change. I plan to lose the vast majority of my weight using atkins and light exercise then adapting a more "normal" diet by slowly reintroducing more carbs and exercise.
I appreciate the concern though.

i am seeing and hearing things about red meat not being as bad for us as was originally rammed down our throats for years and many now recommending that we eat 6 or 8 eggs a week now instead of the 2 because of the dreaded 600mg of cholesterol that they brought ... i would love to see things along those lines more conclusive because i freaking LOVE red meat .. shite, i CRAVE red meat .. i get sick of making turkey burgers and turkey spaghetti because i am trying to limit my red meat consumption ... i also love eggs too ...
the other night, i got a pack of 4% extra lean ground meat and noticed it had less calories than my good ole pack of ground turkey did per 4 oz. and almost the same amount of fat ... so what is it with this red meat vs. white meat thing ??

Like I've been unable to sustain it???
You keep stating things that could be true for every single diet invented by man but you seem to have a bug up you arse about Atkins.
Sustaining any diet or lifestyle change is hard to impossible for most people. That has NOTHING to do with Atkins. I actually think Atkins is easier to sustain than any other diet ever invented.
I take fiber supplements which I probably should suggest to Hulk because the old waste disposal factory can slow down on Atkins.
I've never taken them before but this time I decided to toss them into the mix so I take psyllium husk capsules twice a day to get some extra fiber and they have kept production at full bore. :D

that sounds like the plan to me .. jump start things with atkins .. start enjoying how much better you feel everyday with the weight loss and then move over to something you can sustain the rest of your life ...
i am not really on a diet per say .. but that is because i have actively monitored how much i eat and what i eat along with exercise for over 10 years now ... i am like anyone else .. i put on 10 or 15 extra pounds recently, but just cut out all fast food and traded beer for red wine and that weight is now gone ..
good luck to you, you sound like you are committed to this, so i'm positive you will be successful ... the beauty of it is that you can actually lose the weight faster than you gained it ... then, when you hit your targer weight .. so what if you put on five pounds .. then, you know exactly how to lose it ..

why are you always so fricking sensitive about every fricking thing i say in here ? i am just trying to participate in the thread and state an opinion .. if i got in a gardening thread and said my grass was a beautiful shade of green this summer, you'd want to argue with me the fact that grass really isn't green but just another shade of blue ... jesus .. i know you want to be the grand poobah of this thread .. but you ain't fricking jack lalaine .. you didn't invent dieting .. there are people that pre-date you that lost more weight than you doing the same thing .. good for you .. i am glad you accomplished what you did .. it is impressive .. but don't let the shite go to your head ... seriously ..
stop acting like your opinion is THE opinion in here, because it isn't ... i'm not the first person in the history of the planet that has said something somewhat negative about atkins .. have you been on atkins the whole time and lost the whole 120+ pounds on atkins ?? no .. that is what i am referring to with hulk .. THAT .. the fact that i doubt someone can sustain atkins that long .. which you haven't either ...
get over yourself dude, seriously ..
sorry about this to all of you other guys here in the thread .. i enjoy your posts daily and i enjoy yours too, myth .. just lose the hard on .. it's a little obvious ..

Maybe you should learn to debate an issue with even the remotest of facts. All I am doing is pointing out the obvious fact that every single negative statement you have made about Atkins could be made about every single diet ever created.
Seem like you are being the sensitive Susan.
And guess what...damn straight I am going to plug like hell a diet that helped me lose 120 pounds in 51 weeks. Sue me.

I feel the same way as you Myth, but do as I have done since I started: agree to disagree. It helped me sate my family, and other negaAtkins people.

you and that goofy
emoticon of yours ...
you got pissed because you are on atkins and i didn't laud it ... and the statements i made about atkins are statements that have been made countless times by people far smarter than you or i combined in the medical field .. did i say it was a horrible diet ? no ..did i say it doesn't work short-term ? no .. i said it was hard to maintain that diet long term .. which you yourself have never done .. long term being over a year ... i recommended that the guy get some blood work done to see how his body is reponding to the diet and then the PUTTADAFORKDOWN queen bee's stinger came out ...

the diet has "helped" you lose the weight in short spurts .. but you haven't been on atkins this whole time ... no one said the diet doesn't work and produce results over short periods of time ..
