Observations on Fasting
first, let me point out i've been on this weightloss kick for over a year having started jan 2010. so i'm used to being fairly disciplined about eating and the exercise i get.
for the first 12 months of this, i looked up stuff online, listened to podcasts, experimented with different eating patterns, etc etc etc.
the one thing that popped up many times was 'fasting'. i threw that out as soon as the word appeared and said 'no way in hell i can do that..i can barely make it to dinner if i have a small lunch'.
something recently just clicked for me however and i tried it a couple weeks back for the first time.
it was a miserable attempt.
i did it..but i was still drinking lots of water & coffee which contained cream & splenda.
it was hard.
it was dang hard.
i went to bed and could not sleep..my body fighting me the whole way. it simply did not want to go to bed hungry.
but the next morning i woke up..and realized i felt ok. when i weighed in and saw a 4lb drop, i felt GREAT. sure i was probably dehydrated..but i was 215 and dropped to 211 and then subsequently to 209 and lower.
the point is that 'water weight' never came back. and i've had some dang big meals since then.
fast forward to yesterday. i've been stuck in the 207 zone for a week or so now. 207..208..209..208..207..208...you can see my stats refused to go below that even with minding my calories (or so i thought).
so yesterday i said screw this..i'm done with being 207. so i stuck to coffee and water yesterday..and when i got home last night and made dinner for the kids..it was A HELLUVA LOT EASIER to fast the 2nd time around. i was a little uncomfortable and woke up 2-3 during the night, but i made it through.
today i'm down from 208.4 yesterday to 205.9 today.
so..i'm going to run it back. i'm going to continue the fast another day and wait and have a good meal tomorrow morning before my long group ride.
i saw where a guy had fasted 24 straight days..and went to the gym EVERY SINGLE DAY AND WORKED OUT HARD. and he was fine.
the fact is, once you get a day out..you're on cruise-control and you can fast a 2nd day much much easier.
again, i'm not saying this is for everyone..but i do beleive anyone and everyone CAN do this. its a mental thing..we're so conditioned to believe that fasting will cause us to fall flat on our faces and we'll shrivel up and die if we don't eat for 24 hours that we don't even consider this as a tool for dieting.
that's all i'm gonna say. i've already done 90 elevated pushups today and run up 24 flights of stairs and i feel fantastic.
my body is burning fat for fuel and its got PLENTY. no food needed. i'm not feeling faint or about to keel over.
i can't wait to see the weigh-in tomorrow. i'm damn determined to get to 199. enough foolishness.

You need to be careful. Just because one guy did it, does not mean you can do it.
I have a post on here from back in the first week of January. I fasted about 3 days but stopped when I read all the posts online of people passing out after 3 days of fasting.
One should not be operating a moving vehicle and fasting.
I know you are frustrated by being stuck in a weight range, but fasting causes the body to think there is a food shortage. Pretty much 100% chance you would have lost that weight today even if you had done your normal routine.
I was intrigued to see how long I could go without eating, but the need to leave my house in my car outweighed my desire to continue the fasting experiment.
In truth, I really wasn't any hungrier than normal when I finally broke the fast.

OK weight is going slow but steady, starting to walk some, need to quit the CIGS, can we start another thread dedicated to that?

Went grocery shopping for my new diet.
Got lots of meat (Big pack of chicken breast, a small pack of poke chops, 2 big chuck steaks that I could probably cut in half.. maybe even in quarters), 1 1/2 dozen eggs, some saylad, EVOO, white distilled vinegar, and lemon juice. EVOO, Vinegar, and lemon juice should be pretty obvious but it's for a vinaigrette for my salads. Also bought a scale that measures up to 400 pounds, a small george foreman grill, and a bunch of cooking utensils (last roommate took all of my damn cooking utensils
).
Preliminary weigh-in: 366. This is fully clothed at the end of the day with my phone, wallet, and keys in my pockets. So probably looking more towards 360 or 355.. Official weigh-in comes in the morning.
ETA:
I just want to thank every one of you glorious bastards again. Without running into this thread I doubt I ever would have been so excited to get it going. Seeing you guys' results has me so motivated.. Almost enough to skip going get hammered tonight as a final blow-out. almost. I'd love to meet up with any of you guys and have a beer any day.
On a random note: While I was at Walkmarks a kid, probably 16, came up to me and asked me to buy him some beer
I find it hard to believe that I look like I'm old enough to buy alcohol, but I politely turned him down.

I'm so excited. I went as far as testing out my vinaigrette. let's just say I'm no Bobby Flay, but I'll make it work
I think the vinaigrette won't be too bad, maybe less vinegar would help it. I've never really made one, I just watch a lot of food network haha. I know how to but with more experience I think I'll make a good one.
Thanks guys.
Thanks guys.

I have two basic salad dressings. One is just red wine vinegar with olive oil and the other is 1 tsb of mayo with 2 teaspoons of wasabi horseradish with a little red wine vinegar. Oh also sometimes switch the wasabi with sriracha.
Neither set the world afire but I can tolerate em.

I have discovered the joys of light jogging. Mixing that in with walking and light weights. I actually got to one mile for the first time in probably 10 years! This will speed up the weight loss no doubt. Although slow and steady is fine by me.
Hulk, check out brocolli salads with low fat mayo and red wine vinigrette. If u r interest I can send u my go to salad recipe.

If doing atkins one does not need to eat that horrifyingly bad lite mayo. There is nothing wrong with mayo.
I guess I will be a good example of the good or bad of doing the atkins diet. I had my bloodwork done before I started and now that I am coming up on a year of low carb (for the most part) it will be interesting to see my bloodwork now.

mayo is not bad for you period. loaded with omega3s.
weigh in:
2/11/11________________2/26/11_____________diff
210.5 lbs_______________204.9 lbs__________-5.6 lbs
55.1 lbs fat_____________51.8 lbs fat_________-3.3 lbs
26.2% body fat__________25.3% body fat_____-0.9% fat
27.8 BMI_______________27.1 BMI___________-0.7 BMI
53.8% water____________54.5% water
8.1 bone mass__________8.0 bone mass
HULK, there's a glass weight watchers scale at bed & bath that does all your body stuff (see above) and its $30.00. Bring in one of those 20% off coupons and you can get it for $24.
I would strongly recommend you use that scale..and then every 5 (or 10) lbs you lose, record all the extra data. it will very interesting to watch all those metrics change as you lose weight.

I am of the same opinion. When you start saying things are "bad" limits are placed on eating habits. Too many limits set you up for failure. For me personnaly it is all about balance. Of course we all need to do what works for us.
(Now where's that darn mayo?) :-)

Okay guys, first day! Probably still bloated from all of the alcohol consumed last night but official weigh-in:
363
1st day photos:

363/363/250
I'm setting my goal to 250, probably just for now. Something ascertainable. I'm sure once I get to 250 that won't be enough for me. But it will be a huge milestone to have lost 100+ pounds.
ETA:
Thanks CAD, but I already spent $30 at walmarks on this scale... and $30 don't come easy around here :P I wanted the one that goes to 400 so I could be 100% sure it would catch my weight.
