i'm just disapointed at +5 in the last month or so. I'm not shocked as I've taken on this fat season in true form: carbs and PUFAs are my current staples, with no exercise.

What do you mean with this?

Every time I read it I feel like I'm dyslexic, the first thing I read is FUPAs

167.7

Atkins is working but I was very hungry last night. Almost cheated but I didn't want to cheat on the first day I was back under 170.

It is going to be hard to make it through this weekend cheat free but I really would like to get back to my low water mark of 164.5 before my next cheat.

ok going to reverse my sig a bit

myth you just need to get some good HIIT going. find a routine where you can run up some stairs or knock out some pushups..you'll be absolutely astounded how quickly your body starts to harden up now that you're a virtual 'blank palette'..even a couple weeks worth of pushups will make you look like superman.

now that you're at your ideal weight; adding in a good bit of weight training will transform you to where you don't have to fight that 165-175 battle so much. add a little muscle mass and that will help keep you on an even keel.

also dont focus so much on being 165..if you gain muscle (and weight), embrace it and start paying attention alot more to body fat % and not a number on the scales.

you can get a body fat tool for $25 built into a scale at bed & bath. start focusing on that instead of your weight.

eta its like the cycling world. at first everyone is obsessed with how fast they can go. after you 'mature' and start training, that number is completely irrelevant. you focus *SOLELY* on your heart rate and power (if you have a way to measure that) and the MPH becomes an afterthought that you check out after the ride.

in fact, MPH isn't even a field i display on my bike computer anymore...its irrelevant for racing.

same with weight..once you've reached the 'promised land' focus on how much fat is still on your body..who cares if you're 167 or 178 as long as your body fat is around 10-15%.

Free Jambalaya from Jambalaya Shoppe (employee appreciation week) here in Honzales and I had to tell them to give mine to someone else. I hate passing up free food

If your primary goal is fat loss and overall weight loss, lengthy cardio sessions are completely ineffective.

Could you please explain what you mean by this?

I have heard that after a certain time frame (~20 minutes) you're going to start burning away at muscle instead of fat.

I was going to ask about this today. I was thinking about adding some time to my cardio sessions but I might not now.

I went to Lamendola's Supermarket today for a plate lunch, got some ham, green beans, and collard greens. Good stuff. They had crawfish fettucini. Talk about hard to resist...

I had a chicken breast for lunch today. My diet is getting as bland and shitty as yours.

But it's working so far so I guess I shouldn't complain

in theory it is true longer cardio sessions would burn more calories (forget muscle vs fat..the amount of 'muscle' you would burn is insignificant)

the real life problem is 2-fold.

1. nobody can keep up long, intense cardio sessions over time unless you're hershel walker, madonna or fergie and wake up every day to a personal dietician and have no life beyond your exercise. unfortunately 99.9999% of us have real lives that get in the way (kids, work, school, etc.)

this leads to #2

2. more/harder cardio results in feeling more tired, run-down, HUNGRIER and ironically, less healthy. your immune system is more susceptible to illness due to being in a fatigued state. "feeling tired" makes you feel more hungry in an attempt to 'recover' (which you dont need to do) so more strenuous exercise tends to lead to eating more which is bad if you succumb to an illness or have to take a trip for work that results in you not having time to workout. you're now used to eating 3000 calories a day and its harder for you to 'pull back' and refrain from eating too much. result: WEIGHT GAIN

nobody can sustain this long-term. once you're around your target weight..knock yourself out exercising but be careful about increasing your food intake.

i will say again FOOD IS 95% of the weight-loss equation. its super easy to forget this and believe exercise impacts you much more than it actually does.

its far far FAR better to get in the habit of eating less and NOT REWARDING YOURSELF with a large meal after running for an hour. the problem is we feel pretty damn proud of ourselves after running for an hour and feel like we can eat a whole pizza and still be a pound less the next morning. nope.

I'm worried the ham had sugar on it. It had a really minor hint of sweetness to it.

my "diet" (although its been off the wheels for awhile) was a ribeye and strawberries/whipped cream.

i'd eat that every night and was losing boatloads of weight.

after the lsu/tn game this weekend i am back on it full time.

OK I've been doing HIIT anyway...

I thought the whole purpose of a long steady cardio session was literally for cardiovascular health and not necessarily for weight loss.

Which is exactly what his quote states. For weight loss cardio doesn't do much.

Yes it makes you healthier overall, but it doesn't magically burn tons of fat.

We periodically have this argument with certain people on here. We've never said it isn't overall better for you BUT

I believe most people burn out because they do too much. The mental stress of diet and heavy exercise eventually breaks most people down.

My diet was successful this time because I did almost ZERO exercise for the first year and still dropped 100 pounds. Heck, I dropped 100 pounds in the first 9 months. Started March 16, 2010 and hit 100 pound mark on Christmas Eve.
