Picking a good pineapple

What is the best way to pick out a good pineapple? I’ve heard if you can easily pull a leaf from the middle it’s good. I’ve also heard if it smells good, then it’s ripe. And, also heard if it has a good pattern of eyes it’s good. None of these seem to work well. I’ll get a good one one week and next week it’ll be a crappy one.

squeeze kinda like an avocado, just a bit of give. and smell sweet. healthy green leaves.
or just buy the cut ones in the packages.

Unfortunately I’m not a millionaire, so I can’t buy the pre-cut ones. It’s crazy how much they charge for that. My house eats two a week, so I’m not going to spend $25 on pineapple.

My issue with pineapple and most fruits minus grapes from the store is when to cut it after you purchased it. Most fruits are not ripe when you buy from the store. When you get home need to wait X amount of days till it can be cut. So we have various fruits ripening all at once. Pineapples and melons seems to be harder to gauge, imo.

Melons--my rule of thumb on when to cut is based on smell. When you walk into the room and smell the melon, it's ripe enough to cut.
Pineapples are similar, but you've got to keep an eye on the cut stalk end. They tend to decay/mold starting in that spot. Sometimes, your choice is cut before it's totally ripe or risk having it spoil before you cut it.

start with a "Golden" variety of pineapple, and go by the smell

I think your supposed to put it bottom-up in your grocery cart.
