Where's that?

It's off Hwy 90. You have to cross the train tracks heading towards Kipper Williams park. Just google it and go eat there!

Tampico is passable, especially since you're with kids. Easy enough to find something for the picky on that menu.
But I'd drive back to Morgan City and go to the Latin Corner, a cuban restaurant on Railroad Ave near the river. Tasty cubano, fries topped with some tasty garlicky oregano sprinkle, and nightly specials. Friendly not fussy service. LINK

Good to know.
I find myself driving though there a lot, and it seems Morgan City and the surrounding area is one of the biggest restaurant wastelands in the state.
I'll have to check this joint out.

Tampicos
Chesters Cypress Inn is 20 minutes down road in Gibson

Only place I had found so far that was even remotely worth stopping for. They serve pretty good mole poblano enchiladas (something I have yet to find in New Orleans), so I give them kudos.
Waffle House is literally the second best option I'm aware of within 20 miles.
I'll take note of the Cypress Inn place and the Cuban joint.

No, it's not. You just need to know where to look. Here are a few more:
--Rita Mae's Kitchen on Federal, a few blocks from the river. Homestyle food, gumbo, crab burger.
--Atchafalaya Cafe
--Castellano's deli, on 6th. Sandwiches, burgers, etc.
For dinner, try Cafe JoJo or the Petroleum Club. Ditto for Chester's; I don't think it's open for lunch. If you do make it there, eat the fried frogslegs.
If you think MC/Patterson is a resto wasteland, you've never been to Bunkie. Or Ragley, or Pollock.

To be clear, I was speaking in terms of legitimate sized places.
Thanks for the additions, though.

Okay, then: Minden, Bastrop, or DeRidder (all w/similar population to MC).
If you get off of 90 and go down by the Teche in Patterson, you'll find some addt'l local spots. Can't remember any names off the top of my head right now...
And if you drive US 90 in that stretch, it's worth knowing about LeJeune's bakery in Jeanerette. Ginger planks and perfect traditional LA french bread, with a good crust and fluffy crumb. Packaged in paper, as it should be. LINK
