Oysters - Where to Buy

When I have a taste for oysters I get them from Schaeffer's Seafood on Lake Avenue in Bucktown.

Just be prepared for sticker shock. I called a few months ago to ask about availability and they did have them at the time and I was quoted $55 for a mini sack that was about 80 oysters.

To me, that is insane pricing, but then again, I'm old and can remember being able to buy 100 lb. full sacks for $10 that had between 20-22 dozen oysters depending on their size.

$55 for 80 is a deal compared to here in UAE. I would gladly pay .69 cents per oyster compared to here.

There is only 1 company growing oysters here and online shows 9.90 AED or $2.70 per oyster. Not sure which size but hell!

Buy 10 #2 oysters (90-110 grams each) for 99.75 AED is $27.18... When you divide by 10 = $2.72 per oyster, so you pay 2 cents more when you order 10 pieces. LOL, no bulk discount here.

The prices at the high end restaurants are crazy high, where I have seen some go for $80-100 per dozen.

Damn, that's insane. But I do understand pricing, availability, etc. when buying things that have to be shipped in.

Back in the early 80's I was married to a gal from Dallas, Tx. and we went to visit her mother for a week after we had our son. My ex MIL asked if we'd mind hauling in some shrimp so I got her 50 lbs. of 16/20's right off the boat fresh that cost me $1.50 a lb. to put in her freezer.

She was over the moon ecstatic since shrimp in her town were going for over $5 a lb. at the time---and Dallas isn't but 500 or so miles from N.O.

Of course here in the deep south we wind up paying more for things like salmon and lobsters since they have to be shipped in. So it works both ways.
