Looking around Baton Rouge for a fresh sack of oysters. Would prefer Grand Isle Sea Farms but I doubt they’re at the stores yet. Already called Calandros.

Any hot tips for who may have the best oysters this weekend?

This won't help much, but I got a mini-sack last weekend from Schaefer's seafood in Bucktown. They were nice singles, medium in size, but weren't salty at all. I only ate a few when shucking them and decided to fry the rest over the next 2 days. The wife and I enjoyed our fresh oyster po-boys. My advice is to carry your oyster knife with you and see if they will let you sample a couple from what they are selling.

Oh, I got 9 dozen out of the mini-sack. Gone are the days of 100 lb. whole sacks that cost less than those little sacks they are now selling.

You almost have to get those straight from the fisherman.

Reno's in Sorrento always have decent oysters. Duckroost Seafood in St.Amant as well. Not sure you want to drive out here for them.

Just ordered a small sack for next Friday. Never more than 8-9 dozen in those.

I had an older guy that dredged for oysters and he passed away a couple years ago. I'd buy whole, 100 lb. sacks from him, pay him what he wanted and usually would drop off a couple nice sticks of Bailey's Andouille for him and his wife to have in their gumbo.

I need to head down to Shell Beach or Hopedale one day and check out the other oyster boats when they come back to dock and work out something with one of the owners.

How much do those "mini-sacks" go for? I imagine y'all get great deals on oysters down there. Up here in ATL, they usually go for $.75 per oyster at the grocery stores (shipped in from VA, usually).

Mini-sacks are selling for $45 locally. I got 9 dozen out of the last one, so that's $5 a dozen----unshucked.

Well, before the big BP oil rig explosion/fire/massive oil leak, sacks were going for about $35 each and they were 100 lb. sacks with between 20-22 dozen in each sack. Those were the days for oyster lovers.

Ever since then, they went to mini-sacks and upped the price, and as we all know, once the price goes up and quantity goes down, it will never go back down to where it was before.

ETA: If you think our oyster prices are good, you ought to see what we pay for fresh caught shrimp. I can pick up fresh ones in the 16-20 size for about $4 a lb. By the way, that's 16-20 shrimp per lb. and those are large enough to go damn near from wrist to fingertip on a normal size hand.

After the recent Hurricanes the last few years and the oil spill, oyster prices won’t be coming down anytime soon.

I agree. They've been holding at around $45 a mini-sack for a few years now. Like I said in a prior post, once things go up, they usually never come back down in price because folks are willing to pay.

A little FYI Reno's is closed and a for sale sign out by the road.
