I'm going to be down there that weekend and relatively close to it, so have any of you had good experiences with the oyster festival?

No "R", you'll die.

You won't die, but the experience won't be quite the same as if it was held in cooler months. I've been around this orb for many years and one thing I know is true, oysters are MUCH better in the cooler months of the year.

The temperatures are pushing upper 80's to lower 90's right now, and not considered ideal months for oyster consumption.

I'd pass.

This was true 100 years ago. There is absolutely nothing wrong with oyster consumption year round. Modern refridgeration and all, ya know....

Not sure I agree with this, both from the standpoint of flavor and safety.

Its fine. Usually has a great array of music, via local bands and the Drago's chargrill rig is always on site. Only wild card is the weather.

True, but they are still harvested out of very warm waters this time of year and every oyster boat I know of leaves what they harvest on the deck in sacks until they get back to the dock to off-load.

I find oysters don't hold the same flavor or fullness like they do in the cooler/cold months with the oyster liquor often being a bit cloudy and the oysters themselves being on the skinny side with a different taste.

I agree with this. On New Year’s Day our family gets together and shucks a few sacks. We chargrill the big boys and eat the smaller one raw. Best meal of the year.

I'm just pissed at the price of oysters now, and the size of the sacks you are paying through the nose for.

Before the big BP rig explosion and oil leak messed up the Gulf for years, I could buy a 100 lb. sack of oysters that contained between 20-22 dozen oysters for no more than $35. Now, you get what they call a half sack that may contain 8 dozen oysters and that tiny thing costs $45 and up depending on where you get them.
