I've almost never had an unpleasant experience with the waitstaff of a restaurant, as I am not very picky or demanding.

Recently I went out with my wife to a place I had never been and encountered something that got on my nerve, the waiter was completely over-bearing.

When I ordered my cocktail he straight up told me, "that one isn't one of our favorites" and took it upon himself to change my drink order. The one he brought out was admittedly delicious, but I feel like that was out of place.

He tried to limit our menu choices to two items, and seemed very irked when we insisted on trying something else.

Overall, he was very nice. He did it all with a smile, it just seemed very strange. I always appreciate suggestions, but this felt like it was overboard.

Anybody want to share similar experiences?

Why would he only limit you to eating sides as a meal. That's a bit strange.

Ida Claire in Addison, TX.

The food and drinks were awesome and he was a nice enough guy, I just think it was his personality to interject himself in everything.

I would have said something about changing the order. Did he tell you he was doing it or did he just bring you the drink and it was something else?

Where was this?

Was he open carrying? Might be smart to take his recommendations.

When I ordered it he said something along the lines of "Oh that one really isn't one of our favorites". It was some sort of ginger Julep, which he replaces with a Peach flavored one.

I said something along the lines of "did you not have the one I ordered?" and then he stayed to make sure I tried it and liked it. The drink was good and the same price, so I didn't complain.

Like I said, I didn't think he was rude at all. He just wanted to make his opinion a part of every decision. It was just weird.

ETA - I ordered this: GINGER’S SOUL — $11
pot still black rum, chile
liqueur, fresh ginger,
honey, mint, cayenne

And got this: TOBACCO PEACH — $9
tennessee whiskey,
mint, tobacco syrup,
peach bitters

I was only charged the $9

That's odd. Sometimes I'll ask a server's opinion between two items but I've never had one do what yours did.

Bringing a different drink on his own and staying there to see if you like it is kinda crappy.

Just saw your edit. Yea those are two completely different drinks. I could maybe see him bringing you a different flavor of the drink you ordered but even so that is out of line

I hate when they push items. Makes me think something in the kitchen was about to turn or they ordered too much of something and needed to get it out.

Weird.

Really makes you realize that servers are people with different personalities, and some of them flat out suck That would be off-putting to me as well. And chances are, the guy has no idea he's like that.

Some people

Woah. Those are two different liquors. I'd be pissed. I have a friend who breaks out in hives from certain whiskeys. I bet he'd be pissed if this happened.

I would have refused the replacement...it is far more likely that he got your order wrong & was simply trying to cover it up. Or he's just a weirdo who enjoys screwing with customers.

I used to work in management for a guy who built an 9 figure business from scratch. He was a no BS type of guy. A couple of times a year he would come to his l location in NOLA and he would bring us to dinner- Mr. B's, NOLA, Pelican Club, Antoines, etc.

When we were seated he would tell the waiter to not disturb us after we had ordered (except to serve the food), he would be talking business and he had better not be interrupted while he was explaining something or making a point. He told the waiter that if any of us needed anything, we would wave him over.

With him, the less a waiter hovered around the table, the better tip he would receive.

Sounds like it worked out in your favor then. I previously worked for a restaurant that only had a couple good items on the menu. Sometimes you just have to steer customers away from certain items. I never pushed anyone too hard, but normally the people ended up agreeing with me that it wasnt a very good item if they went against my advice.

there was one specific cocktail drink at a popular restaurant in BR that this board generally loves that was just awful. I mean it was a specialty and people ordered it fairly often, but over 50% of the time I had to take it back and comp it. I steered people out of that one as often as I could

I don't have the time to argue with wait staff.

I usually sneak out when they go in the kitchen for something, then grab drive thru.

I think this is what was going on, he was just not very subtle about it. I found a review from the local paper in Dallas that ripped the restaurant apart when they first opened. It is very popular now, and like I said what i got was very good. I'm guessing they've had a lot of complaints about certain drinks/food items and he was really not in the mood to deal with it that night.

He was nice from start to finish, I just thought the behavior was strange. This post and seeing the negative review of some items on their menu kind of clears it up.
