I've never understood the "wanting a crunch" argument because I do not think nuts have a satisfying crunch to them at all. I will concede a bit to pecans as really they aren't all that crunchy, and generally become pretty soft when used like you are describing. Peanuts though, i don't want them anywhere near anything soft.
Just like rich food needs acid for balance, soft food needs contrasting texture, at least for me. I think one texture alone is boring! When I eat ice cream, I want things in it, and even more than one contrast. Good thing there are choices for many taste preferences!

Another nuts fan here. I've never heard of it being that much of a complaint, but people have their preferences.
Might be a topic for a spin-off thread, but I don't like relish in my potato salad. You might, however, "relish" it....

I don’t disagree that contrasting textures can enhance things, I just don’t think nuts are a good option for that. Nuts in ice cream is absolutely miserable to me. To that point, I don’t like chocolate chips in ice cream either. They just become small rock hard bits that are just annoying.

Rather no nuts, I prefer them by themselves, not on cakes/brownies.

Nuts.
Imagine a German Chocolate Cake without nuts in the frosting.
When you stop crying at that sad thought, you'll realize how important the humble nut really is to some cakes.
