Finley, rather than assuming a lot of things, can you tell us whether you have a price range requirement, casual or more dressy or anything else that might be pertinent to recommendations?

Looking for a little bit of everything - casual, higher end and anything in between.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Is August as good as billed?

Makes it tough, Alley.

I don't think the standards here are all high. Depends on what you're looking for. That's why we usually ask for more info from an OP looking for a place to eat. I'd rather go to brunch at Muriel's than the Court of Two Sisters, any day, though.

August is indeed a great restaurant.

If you want to do a touristy thing, go to Emerils.

For a little less money, good quarter places are Pelican Club, Irene's. We could name at least 20 good places in the quarter.

Lower priced and good would be Johhny's Poboys, Central Grocery, or Coops Place.

If you have the time, take a carraige tour of the quarter or maybe even a city tour.
Go see jazz at the Royal Sonesta or at the Ritz Carlton on the weekend.
Good music clubs on Frenchman. I love DBA and Spotted Cat.

For breakfast, go to Stanley's. If you want a nice brunch, go to Arnauds.

Don't go to Brennans or Court of Two Sisters for breakfast/brunch.

We went out to NOLA (St. Louis St I think) for dinner not too long ago. The duck was incredible! And my son and I split their banana pudding layer cake and wanted to lick the plate it was so good. Just a suggestion. Also, while you're in the WW2 museum, check out the American Sector for lunch, I've never had a bad meal there. And I love all their old-timey cocktails.

I forgot to ask if this is a first visit for you?

If you've not been to one of the grande dame restaurants, then, I'd suggest hitting at least one of them while you're there. Since you're in the FG, I'd suggest Galatoire's or Arnaud's. Antoine's would be last on that list.

You might like Mr. B's for a lunch...gumbo ya ya and BBQ shrimp would be my suggestion, there, unless you've had it before.

I never feel like a tourist in Emeril's. I love the food, there. The andouille crusted fish is a great entree,. The bbq shrimp app is good. No bad choices there.

Off the beaten path, you might like to try the Green Goddess for a casual meal.

Second Stanley's for breakfast. Weekday probably wouldn't be as crowded in the mornings.

Muriel's is a good solid restaurant and good location at Jackson Square near Stanley.

I love brunch at Arnaud's if you're there on a Sunday.

I didn't mean that in a bad way. I agree, it is good.

I've been once for a very brief stay. I went to The Joint for BBQ - I thought it was delicious. I also went to Napoleon House & Gumbo Shop. Those were just OK.

Someone from NOLA told me Jacques Imo's was good, but I don't really know if that's do-able as I don't have access to a car.

Thanks for the suggestions, people. I've noted them all.

I haven't eaten at JI's and it's not on my radar, really. Someone else will have to address that.

You have a vast list to consider since you haven't been to NO, but once. So many good choices just in the FQ and nearby vicinity.

You might also enjoying going to Luke for breakfast. It's just across Canal on St. Charles so almost across the street from the FQ. I love the shrimp and grits with a few poached eggs on top.

I had a free meal at August, and the best thing I had was the salad. It's probably the worst fine dining meal I've had in the city. I will argue with anyone who raves about it. Your taste buds are made of shite.

It's strange, but I've resisted going there all this time. My parents have been 3 times and haven't been wowed one single time. They kept going back to try and figure out what they were missing. These are people who take regular restaurant trips, so I trust their taste. They thought it was good, food was pretty, but just way overrated for them.

I need to go and make my own decision, though we rarely disagree on restaurants.

I wouldn't argue with someone who felt the place is overrated because tastes can vary. But that comment is beyond ridiculous. Seriously, it is conceivable that a person could have a bad experience in any restaurant, but August is far too fine a place for me to let that bullshite go unchallenged. There are other restaurants in the city that I prefer, but August is damned fine place.
