what are some new places in the last couple years preferably the newest.
Merchant kicked arse
Table rocks plus its 4 blocks away

Gouter... I went once for dinner and really enjoyed it. Plenty of delicious small plates.
Lasseigne's and Roux 61 are both relatively new, but I haven't been to either yet.

There's a new po'boy place that opened up on Chimes St. where Combo King was I think. Haven't tried it yet but it's on the list.

I've been to Roux 61 once and I thought it was okay. Roberto's on River Rd is 1000x's better, better priced, and doesn't have the wait.
I'm watching this thread because I'm looking for new restaurant ideas as well.

Are these two restaurants supposed to be comparable or was that just a random thought about Roberto's? I agree that Roberto's is good but it has absolutely nothing to do with Roux 61 unless they revamped their menu and style.

I think you are hating the wrong places. What is pretentious about either of these places? Besides maybe the 'farm to table' moniker of Table, nothing about the place can be perceived as pretentious. The place is in the Southdowns shopping strip and it has some very basic dishes.

Have had the fried platters, gumbo, and etouffee at Roux 61 and I would put them up against any place in BR. Price didnt seem out of line. After looking at Roberto's menu, it seems to be about the same. Maybe Roberto's is better but I cant see the items I listed being much better. Fried seafood can only be so good, assuming they didnt completely screw it up. They probably do get a bigger crowd than Roberto's but that could be due to Robertos being a 20-30 minute drive for most people living in BR.

You're right in saying that if you want fried food you might as well go somewhere cheaper and closer.
If you go to Roberto's the only thing that should be fried is the catfish for the catfish billy (catfish smothered w/ crawfish etoufee) or the Shrimp Roberto (bacon wrapped stuffed shrimp). When I go I usually get one of the daily specials, stuffed catch of the day, or the fish en papillote.
But obviously Roberto's is far from a new restaurant. I suggest everyone give Roux 61 a try.
One fairly new restaurant (<6 months) I just noticed it for the first time the other day is Marina's Mexican Grill on Perkins where Oscar's Pizza was.
Also, anyone know what the Bullfish Bar + Kitchen will be like? I'm hoping it's not just another fried food place. With nothing to go on but the sign out front, I'm hoping for a Lucy's Retired Surfer Bar type menu. It's opening up at the old Marty J's location south of campus.
