Rombauer Zin is one of my absolute favorites. You can usually get it for under $30.

Mollydooker blue-eyed boy will impress drinkers of all levels.

Anything Frank Family is solid for the price.

I had a Chalk Hill cab a few times. Really liked it.

Herbsaint had a Nebbiolo on their wine list in December. It was good...different and good. It wasn't blended.

The best value for a GOOD bottle right now is the Caymus 40th anniversary. It's about $60 and is a 96pt Robert Parker.

Whatever floats your boat but there really is an entire world of killer wine out there well below this price point.

No doubt. To start off there are some great wines in the 12.00 to 20.00 dollar region. Start with something easy to drink. Malbecs are always a great choice.

Martini.. thank you for the condolences.

For everyone else that has asked, I had no price whatsoever in mind. These people have money,so the cost wouldn't impress them ... not that I'm trying to.

I know her and her husband well, though. What will let her know that it's from the heart is that I did my due diligence and found out she's discovered wine in the last few years, and that I took the time to find a GOOD wine, as opposed to just getting the most expensive crap I could find.

Gris Gris ... what you did for your friend was EXACTLY what I had in mind when I originally posted.

Thank You all for your help. I'll keep you updated as to what I get.

My friend has way more money than he could ever need, so I wasn't going by price either. He was very appreciative of the gesture and the fact that I put some thought into it trying to get different wines when he knows I'm not an educated wine person. Even better that I hit a home run with one and got on third base with the others as far as he was concerned. I was lucky.

Sorry about your Mom, Buck. Your friend will appreciate anything you do. The fact that she knows you are most appreciative of her support during a difficult time will be the point.

I recommend Caymus 40th or Stag's Leap Cab, though someone recommended Mollydooker and "The Prisoner" and those are very good wines as well. Prisoner may be the best bang for your buck I've had

For something completely different that shows you have an idea about the local wine scene (or got good advice), look up Vending Machine Winery and buy either "Double Shotgun" or "Crooked Mayor". New Orleans brand made in Napa on plots rented from Stag's Leap and produced in the same facilities. But they put their wines at a lower price point bc it's more of a hobby than a business for them

First, what a terrible name. Second, I tried one of them and it was awful. Would not send that to someone who enjoys good wine.

Just because you didn't like it doesn't mean everyone else doesn't like it. Part of the beauty of wine is how subjective it is. And yea it's a stupid name, but the name on the bottle doesn't make a good wine

Surprising to hear. I think their Horror Show is really solid for the price.

Tried the peep show. Literally didn't finish the tasting pour. And I never let wine go to waste.

No argument there but the OP wanted to get something special/nice and Caymus is a name that even casual wine drinkers might know and you will not find another 96 point robert parker rating for less than $100.
