I shop around at several different grocery stores, and one of them has Mexican meat at the end of the meat isle. (Hi Nabor)

It looks the same as the other meat.

It's much cheaper...three filets were $16.

I have seen it for years but never bought it until yesterday.

I google "Mexican meat" and all it gives me is carne asada recipes and stuff like that.

Has anyone tried Mexican meat? is it safe to eat? taste like shite?

It was sitting next to three filets that were "normal meat" and the $48 price tag made the mexican ones even more appealing.

Will I die if I eat it?

From a grocery store? Is this a serious question?

Mexicans like peppers.

I'm not trying to get a stomachache from some kind of meat from a pepper-only fed cow.

Why does it say "Mexican meat" on it?

I feel like it is a warning of sorts.

One time I found a whole ribeye at Acquistapace in Covington that was marked product of Mexico. It was super cheap. We used the meat for a fajita party and it came out fine. It is just a lower grade of meat, but it's very edible.

Mexico has been one of the top exporters of beef to the US for the last several years. It's probably just that it is put on the label now.

Lower grade, "inspected" so probably below select. No judgement, I've stocked the freezer with "USDA Inspected" Mexican or Canadian beef from Winn-Dixie multiple times. I figure a filet is lean enough that I'm not missing too much.

Sure it was actual filet mignon/tenderloin? A lot of times they bacon wrap a tenderized sirloin and call it a filet. They also mess around with the added moisture to Jack up the weight.

yes, it was labeled "Mexican Filet Mignon",

and it was TERRIBLE.

Texture was good, the sear was great (sous vide'd it to give it it's best shot), but the meat was awful.

It tasted like watered down meat - that's the best way I can think to describe it. If a regular filet is a 10 in "meat" flavor, this steak was a 3.

Do not buy unless you get a cut that you can marinate the shite out of.

I don’t see how it could be any different than the cheap beef that Winn Dixie always puts on sale to get people in the door.

My wife always shows me the sales paper at Rouses or Albertsons and says "look Fallguy, $4.99 ribeyes". Yeah select ones, basically good to cut up and make some tacos

I was going to post this. I got some Mexican filets from Hi Nabor a few years ago and they cooked fine, had nice texture, but had absolutely NO TASTE. Wouldn’t buy them again.

There shouldn't, but there might be a difference between getting butchered filets and getting the entire tenderloin and doing it yourself. I haven't found the WD ones to be that bad, but I've only bought the whole tenderloins.

One thing that would help a lot with cheap meat like this is to serve it with a pan sauce or something similar.

I wouldn't waste lump crab on it, but something like a crawfish cream sauce would be good if the beef flavor just isn't there.

Worked in Rio several years ago and ate more damn steak than should be legal, and all of it was absolutely fantastic. No clue how the raise, feed, butcher, prepare their beef but what ever it is I wish I could find the same here.
