Anybody using one (or four) of these?

For some reason I like the idea of wireless. I guess I could convince myself to get the newest model that you can monitor on your phone two hours away as long as you have WiFi, but it seems completely unnecessary.

My main question to those that have one…They claim the probes have dual sensors. So the tip reads the temperature of the meat (or tofu…I don’t judge) and the base reads the ambient temp assuming you position the probe correctly.

There are so many OT jokes here and I apologize in advance. But I made it as innocuous as I was able.

Is this a question?? If so the answer is yes.

I bought my dad two probably five years ago and they still work fine and he's used them a good amount. They're pretty much as advertised. Wireless, stick it in whatever you're cooking and it'll send you a notification on your phone when it reaches the desired temp

So you didn’t read the directions

Op: I have 2 meater+, I like them well enough. The wireless part is great. I will never go back to a wired probe. But I often have connectivity issues. It has gotten better since I started using my iPad to do the cloud connection, but it’s still a little finicky.

I have one and really like it. Hated fricking with the wires of a the maverick thermos I used to use.

Like someone else said, use it for smoking and bbq - not searing.

Yes. The specific question is can I have the tip in the middle of some beef ribs and get an accurate temp while the same probe monitors the ambient temperature in my kettle.

I've had 3

First (not the plus) was terrible and close to useless.

My first Meater+ got left out in a light rain and never worked again

I'm still using the third one. It's useful but if you're coming from something bombproof like thermoworks it's a little frustrating how touchy they are. 527 degrees is pretty weak for a premier grilling product. That said, I've gone over a fair amount and so far this one is still working.

A thinner, more durable Meater that can go to 750 or so would be perfect, hopefully they'll get there. The connectivity is miles better than the prior version.

the estimated cook times are pretty worthless but other than that no real complaints

The range of the meater+ is shite. It only does bluetooth so if you plan on going in your house, far away from your pit, you lose connectivity. You have to have a separate "probe" that connects to your wireless router, which will let you monitor your cook on your phone. This is annoying and I don't see why they couldn't have built in wireless in the actual thermometer itself.

I have one - love it.

The "exterior" temperature is probably not 100% accurate, but it is definitely close.

My only issue is the connection range. inside of a steel smoker, I have to be within 4-5 feet to be able to pick up signal. I have an old ipad that I use for cloud transmission, and I think the larger models have a wifi repeater built in to the wooden base.

The cost is also a little aggressive, but if that doesn't bother you then yeah go for it. Definitely read the instructions!!

I have used a meater+ for a few years, it's great. As others have said, good for smoking. I don't blame it for not being able to predict the end time, my fires are inconsistent so how is it going to know?

Not sure why you would use it for a 4 minute cook like a steak. Just stand there and use the instant read if you want. Also the probe is super thick, so it works well in roasts/briskets/butts but it would be awkward to shove into a chop or steak.

There might be better ones out there but it works.

Those of you having connectivity issues….are you putting the wooden base near the probe outside of your grill/smoker? That’s where I was screwing up at first. I didn’t realize that part had to be near the probe. I stick the magnet on my smoker leg and the Bluetooth works fine now.

I love mine. Been using it for a couple of years. The meater plus has a repeater built into the wooden base. I try to put the base 4-5 feet from the smoker and then I get about 25 feet of range from the base.

Pros:
- Battery life is pretty impressive I've only changed the double A batteries 3 time in 2 years and I use this thing a few times per week.

- Convenience - no wires to run or coil up and store.

- Accurate readings on the internal probe and the ambient temp.

- the app is great. If you pull when the app says pull and rest when the app says rest then your meat will be perfectly cooked. They log data from many cooks and their algorithms are good.

Cons:
- I can stay consistently connected inside my camp chef smoker but if I use a foil pan and cover the meat (and probe) I lose connection.

- I wish it could handle higher temps.

- my biggest complaint, you have to insert the probe about 3 inches to a groove that is in the probe for it to be accurate. That's not an issue on a brisket, pork shoulder or other large cuts of meat to get the tip in the center of the meat. With steaks you can go in from the side for a ribeye, but some filets aren't thick or wide enough. With chicken thighs or other small cuts its not really possible to insert the probe as far as it needs to go and still get the tip in the center of the meat.
