Grits are a breakfast food. Rather rice or potatoes for gravy. Outside of shrimp and grits, seldom do I crave grits with a gravy.

ETA: and craving shrimp and grits isn't really something I do either

Grew up on it. Daddy used to tell my grandma it was so good the tongue was licking the spoon while she stirred I first had it with grits about 3 years ago.

Wasn't a normal dish for us, but if we did it, it was rice.

Wasn't a dish for us. We were more of a fricassee family. Just how I was raised. I've said it before, but when your father is a rice farmer you have a VERY skewed perspective. That's why these discussions are interesting, it's purely regional and/or familial. Though it was funny, my grandfather raised beef cattle and we probably ate less beef than most. A lot of pork (it's not a holiday without roast pork) and a lot of game. And to this day I feel privileged to have had the upbringing I did and enjoy the foods I was raised upon.

You're good people, Cape. I don't care what I hear about you. I laugh at/enjoy most of what you have to say

If we're including grits, that changes all.....Grits are easily the best for me. Mashed potatoes roll in at second and rice lags in behind. I enjoy all three fwiw.

Don't worry. I know your rice history. I love rice. I love grits, too, second to rice but prefer grits with certain dishes.

The dirty grits I had at Commander's were the best grits I think I've eaten. My goodness.

Thanks for paying for my college!

I think they all have their place, but I have an obvious bias. I won't tell anyone they're wrong, as ultimately they all have different flavor profiles that can absolutely work. Too bad OTIS is one of those Idaho yankees that hates America and is basically a Canadian Socialist

With a family of 8 rice eaters, I'm pretty sure we helped your family in some way.

Otis ain't right. Everyone knows that! He makes that bay leaf gumbo. He hasn't learned about sassafras.

Man, that's a tough one.

I'll go with rice only because I'm picky about my mashed potatoes.

Growing up my moms regular rotation included.

Liver & Onions and grits
Fresh sausage/onions and gravy with grits

We rarely if ever had mashed potatoes.

Me = rice

my wife = potatoes

I like potatoes more, but I grew up eating rice almost daily, so its just natural for me to always put rice on if I make a roast or whatnot. My wife has to remind me to do mashed potatoes on occasion.

All of these things, yes. I definitely think rice > potatoes.. but in rich dishes like that, grits are so good. Oddly, roast isn't all that different but I'd still prefer rice with a roast.
