Posted this morning on FB. James and Lina are keeping the other two stores open.

quote:

It is with mixed emotions that we announce this Friday, June 14, will be the last day of operations for our downtown cafe. Magpie Overpass and Pointe Marie will continue with the same operating hours without change. We are so grateful to the the community for the support it has shown us since we opened the downtown cafe doors almost 3 years ago. We feel that a business and brand is a living breathing entity. As such, there is expansion and contraction. In 2015, expansion to a second cafe location seemed to be the right path for Magpie. We loved the experience and have no regrets. We are proud of the restaurant space we built, teams we assembled, and friends we made. Now in 2019, consolidation is the best way to provide the best experience to our team and our customers As Heraclitus said, “Change is the only constant in Life”. That is how Magpie was created over 7 years ago, and so it is today. Thank you! From the Magpie family, we hope that you are making an intentional effort to Live What You Love.

I have tried many times to go downtown to Magpie on the weekends, but they never seemed to be open over there.

My SO has tried to go a few times after hitting up the farmers market. She was only successful 1 time and said the waitresses are all bitches. Guess its too early for the hipsters to get up and serve you.

Why do places feel the need to write some ridiculous heart felt post when they close. I get it for some places but most places are closing because they failed. All the blame, in this case, falls upon magpie IMO.

So is magpie in the PM subdivision off river road... Wonder how those hipster servers mesh with the residents of PM?

Maybe your SO is the bitch? Most employees there couldn't be nicer.

I’ve only been a few times, but nobody has ever been rude to me. I feel like the reason for closing has a lot more to do with how much downtown sucks for businesses like that.

They built out a very nice space in a brand new building, which I’m sure wasn’t cheap. You probably have to sell a lot of coffee to see a profit there.

Two things there were horribly inconsistent:

Hours of operation

Quality of espresso drinks.

Picked the wrong location for sure. It’s a shame. That build out had to cost some change.

Shame. Loved the place.

They weren’t open early enough to catch pre-business crowd and stopped staying open late for happy hour and apps.

I think that did them in.

Magpie is trash for specialty coffee. It's as low quality you'll find for specialty coffee shops. Never had a good coffee experience there.

That's not true...downtown has a handful of very good resturants...but it has an awful lot of bars and resturants that come and go quickly...
There are way too many restrictions by city leaders to make downtown the vibrant area that it was years ago and could be again...
The downtown development district needs new life and New leadership...it is not progressive enough...
Also have a problem with DAVIS RHORER the head of the DDD talking on tv about how important it is for people to live downtown...WHEN HE DOESNT

Why do you care? It’s his job that he is paid to do.

What do you suggest for being more “progressive?” Should the DDD subsidize private businesses downtown?

Mid City is in the middle of a rebirth and has much more residential around it and has become more or less the new arts and entertainment district. As close as it is to downtown it is always going to be hard for that area. BR isn’t big enough for 2 AE districts that close.

Downtown has had many chances. This may be the final nail in the coffin until the next rebirth.

The bars downtown are pretty bad. A few good restaurants keep it somewhat flowing.

Downvote away, but Magpie is a poor man's specialty coffee shop. Quality and training is a low priority. Choice of coffee providers likewise.
