Lovers of Pappas Bar-B-Q are getting many more locations in town, while fans of Luther's Bar-B-Q are out of luck.
Near the end of last year, Luther's quietly sold its chain of restaurants to a competitor, Houston-based Pappas Restaurants. Pappas has converted five of the old Luther's sites and will transform about eight more in the next several months, Pappas Restaurants CEO Chris Pappas said.
Pappas Restaurants decided to acquire the Houston chain because "it was for sale," Pappas said. "We've been in the barbecue business for a long time, and we thought it would be a way to grow our barbecue business."
Food at Luther's-turned-Pappas Bar-B-Q restaurants will strongly resemble the Pappas Bar-B-Q menu, he said, while a few items from the Luther's menu will remain, depending on location and demand.
Pappas acquired 19 Luther's sites in Houston, Beaumont and Louisiana, but six have closed because of hurricane damage, Interstate 10 expansion and other considerations, Pappas said.
Before the acquisition, Pappas had six barbecue restaurants in the Houston area.

We lived in Richland Hills, TX (Ft Worth suburb)over thirty years ago and there was a Luther's at the Bedford Mall. I can still remember how good it was.

Yeah, and I remember their sauce being sweet and they cooked their ribs down quite a bit. At the time it was the shite but we have a new era in BBQ in the region.

Edwin Edwards owned the on in BR near Cortana Mall.
eta: I usually got the brisket. EWE always skimmed the fat off the top for himself. :rimshot:

My first job was Luther's in Lafayette when I was 14. Started as a busboy and worked into the flattop grill line cook doing burgers. Never got to the bbq side of the house, as everyone was Mexican and in their 50s.

I would say Johnson's Boucenierre, but they're closed on Mondays and 2 Paul's recently closed for good.
Rouses on Betrand might be the best local option at this point for BBQ?

They had a sleeper sandwich. A BBQ ham sandwich. It was finely chopped ham with Cattleman's bbq sauce on a buttered and toasted bun. Cattleman's straight out the bottle was their sauce.

I used to go to the one on Severn in Metairie. Ribs, crispy onion rings and loaded baked potatoes were pretty good. But if has been gone for years. Probably a good thing for my diet.
