Louisiana food I’d never had before

I’m from Tennessee and was visiting family in Covington this past weekend. My cousin is a great cook and said I’m gonna make you something you’ve probably never had while pointing to some strange pear looking things on the table. Anyway, he prepared stuffed Mirlitons for me and they were awesome! Wish we had them up in Tennessee

Are you sure you don’t? Also called chayote squash or vegetable pear.

Not sure where you live in TN but you can find them as another poster said as chayote squash in Kroger Fresh Market and Publix. They are not always good quality and expensive though sometimes 3.99 a pound where they are 10 for a dollar in New Orleans. I try and haul them back with me to TN when I visit home.

Gotcha, I’ll try and search for some

Since we are on the subject, here is a link to a bunch of other things you can do with them that I just came across.

He stuffed his with breadcrumbs, sweet onion, green onion and shrimp. Is that what you typically use?

voodoo gumbo in bellevue has some decent food and $6 hurricanes and beignets and everything is on Leidenheimer bread. i don't recommend the gumbo though, not nearly rich enough for me.
fairview tn has a lafayette native who runs a store called 'roux de view' and she bring back all kinds of good stuff from LA all the time like crawfish boudin, boudin balls and king cakes.

I wish I had taken pics during the cook, but I made two dishes with mirliton a few days ago.
I made a mirliton rice dressing for my husband. Ground beef, Italian sausage (alternatively, ground pork), trinity, garlic, cubed mirliton that had been boiled until tender, peeled, cut up, etc.
Could’ve used more dressing mixture or a little less rice, but he was happy with taste.
And in a casserole with the same mixture, plus cheese, low carb bread crumbs, no rice.

Nippers corner area, was born in Tennessee but my dad and that half of my family is all from Louisiana so I’d like to think I’ve got at least a little Cajun in me, haha.

If you are on facebook they have a group called mirliton.org that has the cajun keto chef guy in it and he has been posting all sorts of things he does with mirliton.

Shrimp and mirliton is a classic combination.

Haven’t tried them picked yet but it’s on my to do list. I got another cookbook that’s merliton heavy that have a few recipes for that.

Shrimp and mirliton is a classic combination.
The problem with the shrimp mirliton combo is that neither my son nor his wife like shrimp (!!!), and I want to have mirliton on the holiday table. I might have to indulge myself and make a separate one with shrimp.
NOLAGT, those chips look amazing, and who doesn’t love a gratin?

That's what id do
One thing I was thinking about for a cooking challenge was a shrimp and mirliton fettuccine alfredo. Puree some mirliton and mix it in with the cream/cheese. I just didn't have the time. Still plan to make it one day.

If it were not for the fact that one of my BILs is from Luling, I would still have never had one. It's just not common in a lot of La.
