I've got my $120 weber holding 230n deg F with lots of smoke. Can't do lower but can go higher. Damn things last decades. This is my second one in 40 yrs. I upgraded to the one with the ash catch at the bottom.
I separate the fire grate with brick into a hot section and a cool section.
Yep. Webber Kettle.

I had the basic Weber Kettle with ash catcher for years and loved it.
Then I got a Weber Master Touch 22-in Kettle ($199). Costs just a bit more, but it has some features that make it worth it. Sturdier legs that pin on rather than the crush-connection, heavier and hinged grate, heat shields on the handle, 2 charcoal baskets, bigger wheels, it's taller, and has a decent temperature gauge.
The Master Touch is now my most used grill/smoker item. Very versatile.

+1. Dad has had one for like 35 years. I got one a few years ago for Christmas. They work and if taken care of will probably still be here smoking when I die

I bought a kettle in 1992 when I got my first place with a yard
it cooked and traveled with me thru four houses and two hurricanes
in 2012 I pulled the legs off, made a crude stand and table with scrap materials, put new grates in it and brought it to the camp
as of 2017 it's still cooking

Why are you baws steering him towards a briquette grill when he wants a Komado type grill?
Because a Weber Kettle can do just about anything a Komado grill will do. And it costs half of what the cheapest options for Komado's go for. They're like an anvil.

Sounds like by that argument that people like me who have a BGE/Kamado Joe/Primo wasted our money since the item he listed gets similar results but so does this $100 grill.

I don't think he said he wanted a kamado type grill. He just happened to link a cheap version of one. We are trying to help him not replace a grill in 4 years after it rusts out. A Weber kettle can do all of the things that cheap kamado can do, just at a better price and better construction. The Primos and BGEs are ceramic and completely different grills.
And I use lump in my "briquette" Weber kettle all the time.

He was looking at a Char-Grill Kamado Grill since the ceramic is too expensive. I think y'all are fixed on the fact he said charcoal.
I had Char-Grill Kamado Grill and it is built very well and does a great job of this style of cooking which is controlled air flow and not the same as the type of grills y'all are talking about despite the fact the end results may be the same, albeit more work.

No, it's really not more work. Did 2 racks of spare ribs on my Weber last weekend. Held the Weber at 225 for 5 hours without a problem. I've done an 11lb whole packer brisket on it for 14 hours, put an additional half chimney of lump in at the 10hour mark, and never once dropped below 200 degrees. They are really good versatile cookers, and they are extremely affordable.

Like I said I am not doubting the performance. Normally with these grills though there is more wrapping, or 3 2 1 method etc but if you don't do that ok.
But still, these are two different types of grilling methods and I read his request differently then y'all do.

I've got 2 of the Char Griller Kamado from back when they used wooden side tables & handles. I do like them but man you better keep them clean and in the dry. I'm still using both, but lots of rust issues, many of which could be my fault for not cleaning them up like I should. The top vents would leak enough that the ash dump would fill up with water if it rained.
It's not a ceramic, but it's also a fraction of the price of a ceramic that size.

You can get a Portable Kitchen. This thing is amazing. I inherited one from my dad when he passed away. Been using it more and more. Amazing for grilling.
Can get for around $350 new, but you might be able to find one on craigslit...maybe. They last forever!!
