Attempting my first seafood gumbo this Christmas, and was wondering if there are any places y’all prefer when getting ingredients for a seafood gumbo (shrimp, oysters, crab meat, etc). Thanks in advance.

Anywhere but seafood from a grocery store. Make broth with the shrimp heads/shells and throw in some gumbo crabs when boiling if you want to go the extra mile. Darkish roux. Takes time but well worth it.

And if using fresh oysters, strain the oyster liquor to remove any shell particles that may be in it and put that in the pot too.

Don't forget to add your salt/spice after you cook the gumbo.

I buy most of my fresh seafood (shrimp, crabs, oysters) from the Seafood Farmers Market and local merchants/vendors in Delcambre, Erath, Maurice, & Abbeville. Call ahead to reserve what you need. I buy gumbo crabs from Rouses.

Delcambre Seafood Direct - follow them on FB as the shrimp boats advertise their catch, price, and when they will be arriving at the docks
