I grew up in New Orleans in an Italian family, we didn't eat out much and if we did, it wasn't Italian. Most of the New Orleans Italian places that I like are really Creole-Italian. Places like Mosca's, Mandina's, Tony Angello's are Creole-Italian, are a marriage of two great cuisines.

Actually, I don't really crave "red gravy" veru often when I eat out.

The orginal Carmine's in Bucktown was good. Lately, if I do go out for Italian, I go to Venezia.

Also, I don't think anyone mentioned stuffed artichoke. My mother makes this. She got her recipes from her mother who's family was from Sicily, so, I pretty much just cook when I want Italian.

Love me some good stuffed artichoke. I've got some Italian friends who used to hook me up with some homemade from time to time.

I eat there before most of the Hornets game. Veal Supreme is the bomb. It's hard for me to even order anything else.

Maybe so, but when you look at classic sicilian menus in my experience in the US these are staples on all of them.

ETA: I guess I think more of it as a style of cooking than where the food originated.
There are plenty of items in a cajun cookbook that we call cajun, but they didn't originate here.

Actually, haven't been in awhile. Maybe a year or more. I don't think it was the same post Katrina. But, neither were a lot of things.

Oh, and Carmine's on Vet's has a seafood stuffed artichoke as an appetizer.

I mostly agree with you. Mexican too. That is why I don't go to Carrabas or Pasados or some other higher priced Italian or Mexican place.

Maybe that's my problem. Can't say I've tried much more than the chicken parm. Their pizza's are good though.

Italian is my favorite food to cook.. and near the top to eat.

I can't cook Louisiana/cajun food to save my life, but Italian.. man I can make some mean Italian food.
