I currently have a gas grill and a Masterbuilt electric smoker. Thinking about getting rid of both and just moving to a charcoal bbq pit with an offset fire box. Don't need anything too big or fancy. Just want it to be decent quality. I also don't want to break the bank. Is it possibly to buy in this price range or have a small patio pit built for this price?

you can but it will require a little work to get it smoking right. the offsets in that range usually leak in a few places and the metal wont be as thick

checked out the one at Academy the other day. Seems to be well put together. I was most impressed at the weight of the whole thing.

Cant stand a grill that feels light and flimsy.

The Old Country Pecos offset smoker at Academy is made out 3/16 steel and it is a great by at $399.00. It still has issues but at that price point it is worth the money to purchase and another 30-40.00 worth of gasket material to correct its issues.

a $ 399.00 22.5" Weber Smokey Mountain smoker will also do everything you are looking for.

Looked up a few videos on suggested mods and it appears this thing can be made into a pretty serviceable smoker. Thanks.

At that price, I would consider getting a kettle BBQ for grilling, and a Weber Smokey Mountain for dedicated smoking.

This. If all you have is 600 or 700 bucks and can't run it up to 1200 or so for decent iron, I would recommend the Kettle & WSM combination. Can't be beat.

Anyone ever buy a charcoal grill from the Angola Rodeo market?

I've only been once but the grills they had for sale there looked pretty heavy duty.
