Also, what if I put two slices of pizza together, toppings inward? Does that become a sandwich?

A pizza sandwich!

No. That's a calzone. By default.

Solid point.

I added a bonus question to the final exam I'm giving my 8th graders today -- "Is a hot dog a sandwich?" I'll report back with data to finally put this issue to rest.

Calzones are not sandwiches. They are pies with two crusts.

Pies are not sandwiches.

I don't trust today's education system to give children the freedom of thought needed to balance the consequences of this decision.

I don't care for open face sandwiches either.

I love them.

I assume the Grilled Veggies on Foccacia at Chelsea's counts. I am addicted.

Is a salad a sandwich also if it has croutons in it?

Update from Kennahbrah: So far it's 24-19 in favor of hot dogs being a sandwich.

I question the veracity of my data, however. When you have responses like this, it becomes obvious that all of my students are liars.

Nearly the entire Mexican cuisine is a type of sandwich.

A hot dog is not a sandwich. It's a hot dog.

Just switch to Italian, a language with lots of words for this stuff:
--crostini: piece of bread with stuff on top (beans, tomatoes, sauteed veg, chicken livers, caponata, pretty much whatever you want)
--tramezzini: crustless sliced bread sandwich with various fillings
--panino imbottito: "stuffed" sandwich made on a small roll (not pressed like the US version); panino by itself is just a small bread roll; usually followed by the name of the filling (panino con proscuitto, and so on)
